how many have problem with lights

So pages on the net say this is rare, but people have talked about it a lot, n my mom n I both have problems with some flashing lights, and I have light sensitivity in general. Depending on what condition my body is in at the moment. I havea lot of health issues, some lights seem to completely envelop me, some blinking lights will blink strongly inside of my head. Not really feeling like writing all this complicated stuff at the moment but am wondering what people with epilepsy also have problems with light sensitivity? N do you think some lights do it bc of toxic materials in them?

Though photosensitive epilepsy is listed as relatively rare (about 3-5% of folks with epilepsy), it may be underreported, since folks often have more than seizure trigger. Certainly, many people are bothered in some way by strobes or fluorescents or flickering. It's not due to toxic materials in the lights though -- the triggering has to do with the speed/frequency of the light. Everyone reacts differently, but the sensitive range is between 5 and 30 times per second.

The flashing affects the involve the primary visual cortex, which processes visual information. In folks whose cortices are easily excited, the flashing patterns overwhelm them, setting off the firing of the neurons, which in turn spreads to other parts of the brain.
