I have not practiced any of the choices you listed. I have seen a hypnotherapist but it was for insomnia. It worked but it did take several months. It has not occurred to me to try it for epilepsy???????

Well - I stay active, but there's no vote
for "active"

I added another option. :hi5:

You can do yoga and meditation to put you to sleep, depression, epilepsy, anxiety.

My husband said I would do better if I meditated. I am not as comfortable as he is with a 30 min -1 hr meditation.

I've never meditated. I don't know where to start. Because of these last seizures, I'm scared to go to sleep. I start having more seizures when I get that monthly visit from "Aunt Flo". ha ha.

Stacy, odd you should state that: I feel the
same way; the fear of going to sleep knowing
that trouble may brew. But here's the weird
part on my end; I don't know if it happened
or not until I wake up! SCARY!

As for Aunt Flo, I'm in that stage where she
can't make up her mind if she's coming or not,
I'm at that age where even the perkies have
gone south to retire!

I personally love meditation, and specific breathing techniques. Andrew Weil recommends one and it is a wonderful centering method. I am looking into Yoga for my daughter, not the physical variety, but again one that helps to center the mind and soul

I do A LOT of stretches and I used to benefit from massage therapy...but my last massage took me into a place that allowed me to have a GTC seizure. It probably was a 'startle' seizure since I was so relaxed and the surroundings were so quiet and pleasant...but now I would find it difficult to really relax for fear of a repeat!
Basically, for me anyway, I am 1000% behind the idea of meditation\yoga\relaxation...but am really wary at this point to actually DO it again until I can find a worthy 'fortress of solitude' where no one can disturb me!
For those who don't suffer this problem I HIGHLY RECOMMEND any relaxation techniques!
Peace.

Do you have any reccommended schools or books for meditation?

BACKGROUND: Psychological interventions such as relaxation therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, bio-feedback and educational interventions have been used alone or in combination in the treatment of epilepsy, to reduce the seizure frequency and improve the quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether the treatment of epilepsy with psychological methods is effective in reducing seizure frequency and/or leads to a better quality of life.
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: In view of methodological deficiencies and limited number of individuals studied, we have found no reliable evidence to support the use of these treatments and further trials are needed.

I am not sure why they even bother wasting their time on such studies if they don't have enough people to study. I think personal experience and independent observation is far greater research. Though we are suppose to sit back and twiddle our thumbs until they have enough of these "research" studies done before insurance will even consider covering alternative therapies. Makes me crazy.

I used to practice meditation, but found that the relaxed state of mind would send me a little closer to having a seizure.

Like brain put, I'm more of an active person too.....both body and mind :)

I've been doing YOGA for 15 minutes every day when I awake... Get this. It's the CD I got free with a McDonald's Adult Happy Meal!!! I don't even eat there usually, but I LOVE the CD. I also calm myself and stretch for a little while every night right before bed. I'm getting to where I'm not afraid to sleep anymore, and I'm NOT afraid to wake up in the morning. I now take my Pregnenolone with some Calcium and Magnesium chewables before bed. Then stretch and get into bed. All's well.

I also spoke with Dr. Donna Andrews, "Epilepsy Specialist" the other day and within a few minutes of our conversation, she suggested I take Pamprin (a PMS syndrome pill found over the counter) for 2 days, 4 days prior to my period. I counted on the calender and started the Pamprin that day. She explained that every month water builds up inside the brain and my menstrual cycle is my body's way of saying "I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!" and having a seizure. She added that she hadn't seized for 38 years! I'm certainly trying it out. I know there could be other triggers, but this is certainly worth looking into.

I have plans to call Dr Andrews this week.
That is an easy and interesting suggestion she gave you Stacy. Certainly worth a try.
Glad to know you have been having relief and all's well.

I think any avenue i worth a shot especially anything such as these listed in this thread as it is not involving yet another med....

As was stated earlier I get scared going to sleep as I tend to have a very strong aura that only occurs when I am laying down with my eyes shut ready to go to bed which involves a pulse that feels like it is in my ears...

i have tried various treatments to try to be able to fall asleep as we all no what can happen when we dont sleep.. not so good for us which makes you more anxious to get to sleep which in return makes it harder to sleep....

So I have tried meditaion and natural music like raiforest music birds that sort of thing to help get to sleep.... it did help but it only seems to work at certain times....

I agree, I believe stress and anxiety is the major cause to my sons sz.

We plan on trying EPSON salts and Exercise/Breathing therapy.

Stace,
That's really neat about the yoga and the suggestion from Dr. Andrews. Let's hope it is smoothe sailing for you next month. I think I'll go get me a happy meal next time I'm in town to get that CD. I'm so out of practice with my yoga! Glad you are feeling better.

I highly recommend almost any book of the Dalaï Lama. Even better, listen to one of his conference. His voice is really smoothing and the meditations he proposed are universal . Good Luck

I have a number of yoga and pilates exercizes which I do daily for my back and neck pain.

I'm really into positive thinking. Several years ago, I took a Dale Carnegie course. It did involve some public speaking, mnemonic ways to remember people's names, and it also emphasized methods to deal with stress. Nothing about yoga or meditation was mentioned but it did promote positive thinking and emotional defense mechanisms against stressful situations.
