Hello,
I'm new here and was hoping I could get some help. I have epilepsy as a result of a blood clot that was found on my brain several years ago. I have headaches often, even though I have been seizure free for years and tests show normal. Does anyone know of a medication you can take for headaches that is safe for both epileptics and persons on blood thinners? Tylenol does not work well for me, and all over the counter headache meds besides Tylenol I am afraid to take because they warn against being on blood thinners and taking them. Are there prescription meds that can be taken in my situation? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey Jgn, welcome to CWE!

Some prescription pain meds that may be safe to take are these:

Ultram, Ultracet
Lorcet, Lortab, Vicodin
Dilaudid
Demerol
MS Contin
Percocet

However, you should definitely check with your doctor to make sure any medication is appropriate for your particular situation.

I was actually prescribed amitriptyline for rebound headaches that I had a while back. I think I was supposed to stay on it, but I stopped taking it after a short while (which was what idea was, I guess there was some confusion between nurse practitioners).

Anyway, another medication you might try. :twocents:

Hi Jgn,

Welcome to the forum! To find the best med to help you ask your Dr. to do a DNA test on you. All they do is take some blood from you and get some salvia from your mouth that is sent to the lab and they will see the amount of enzymes in your liver along with your body chemistry and they can then match that up to the best med for you with the least side effect. I had this done after trying over 10 different seizure meds. My Dr. then did the DNA test on me and found out I was drug resistant so I was put on cbd (medical marijuana) and that works great for both seizures and headaches. I take a blood thinner also and it hasn't caused any problems. If you are interested check out healthyhempoil.com Wishing you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

After many seizures I'll have severe headaches. I've probably tried every med out there for it, and I even went to a headache/migraine (not sure what they're called) specialist and none of the meds I was given helped even a little. I even had back problems a while ago, so bad I couldn't move at times. I was given several different pain meds and muscle relaxers but they did nothing except make me fall asleep. Ended up having to have surgery for my back and now it doesn't hurt at all.

I've found that the only med that seems to help me for anything - headaches, body pains, after surgery pain and so on - is over the counter Advil. I'm not sure if that would be ok to take with blood thinners or not but you could ask your dr about taking it and maybe give it a try. Not all meds work the same for one person as it does another so it's not a 'I'm sure 100% it will work for you' thing.

Unfortunately, Advil/Ibuprofen thins the blood, so it's usually a no-go for people who are already on blood thinners.
