ive been sat here wondering for quite some time now how much of an effect hormones have on seizures and could they be the sole reason for seizures ??:ponder:

such as :
thyroid problems
and things like poly cystic ovaries and hormonal fluctuations ? :ponder:

love to hear your veiws

My answer would be:

Yes they do have an effect on many people who have a lowered seizure threshold.
Could they be the sole reason - difficult question here is why

Everyone has a seizure threshold. If your hormones are out of balance, and in my non medical terms... surge the system. It puts stress on the body. If you have thyroid problems such as adrenal fatigue, your body is under stress. If you eat a diet that is converted to sugar in the system, which makes the body produce more insulin than what the body can manage effectively, you put stress on the system. Insulin surges will cause hormonal imbalance too. Also if you are not sleeping well, you put stress on the system.

It is a fine balance, and the more ways you can improve and raise your seizure threshold, the more likely you will reduce or eliminate your seizures.

Hormonal seizures = catamenial seizures

I know that my AED contributed to my Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. In the list of side effects for Tegretol, it lists cysts on ovaries, heavy or irregular periods and hormone imbalance. All of these are symptoms of PCOS and were aggravated by the fact I was taking this AED.

new here but from what i've read up on, over the last few years... anything that places stress upon your system will trigger seizures to intensify and/or occur. the body is such a delicate system and anything that overloads it in one area, or the other, will cause a reaction in another area.

I know that if I do not sleep well for a bit, I have more seizures. I know that if I am under quite a bit of stress, I have more seizures.

Also, anything that messes with the thyroid gland, insulin levels, and hormones (male or female) will cause other issues to magnify and/or increase in activity. This includes Migraines, Fibromylgia, Neuropatic pain, Chronic Fatigue, Seizures, etc...

I used to have sporadic, hit or miss - nothing related to cycles (I'm a woman), seizures. However, since I've now entered peri-menopause and hormones have become more imbalanced, cyst found, etc.. I am having more "partial" and less PComplex... occurring during the night or when I am just about asleep... and are "clustering" over a course of a few days.

Hormone fluctuations are my main (possibly only) seizure trigger. It took me a couple of years to put it together, but once they were beginning to be controlled by meds, it was obvious that the breakthrough seizures were centered around the beginning and middle of my monthly cycle. My first neurologist told me it wasn't possible. My GP told me it was possible and explained why, and my current neurologist has never really said anything about it.
ETA: My gynecologist put me on birth control over the summer because of my painful periods, and I had seizures every day for two weeks until I realized- duh! birth control pills have HORMONES! I stopped taking those right away.

Thanks for your reply
i see my new neurologist on the 17th january ... and i am going to mention this to him... because before i was put on my epilim ... i would always without fail be hospitalised cuase of a bad tonic clonic seizure and it would always be the day before my period started ... but becuase i have poly-cystic ovaries my periods are so irregular and unpredicatable ... making it hard to pin point the when and where so to speak ...
but ive been put on a contraceptive pill (cilest) and i now take epilim ... and touch wood i havent had any seizures centred around my cycle

Did you see my edit in my previous post? I think I made the edit at the same time as you were replying. So you're on a contraceptive pill and it helped stop your seizures, or was it the epilim? As I said in my edit, contraceptive pill made my seizures worse and I was having multiple breakthrough seizures a day for 2 weeks before I realized why.

I seem to be okay on this birth control pill dont seem to be having any problems ... but then i think it maybe because its leveling out my hormones and making them more "stable" so therefore preventing this mix up and recipe for seizures

i stabalised on the epilim first before starting the contraceptive ....
but my main reason for the contraceptive is to try and get some regularity over my cycle

Well, the only thing I got from these medications are bad memory and OCD.
That's it :(

Krista my daughter was put on a birthcontrol pill too, and it seems to be helping her monthly symptoms. I think they can be tweaked to your needs. Or you might try a bio-identical hormone, like a progesterone or estrogen cream. Do this through someone that is highly knowledgeable though.
