Just had a 33minute one about an hour ago, curious to know how long yours usually last. Haven't felt well all day. Lots of auras. It's 38degrees an I've been freezing, wrapped p in jumper and blankets watching tv. Maybe i'm coming down with something.

:( Sorry Wobblez. I hope your not coming down with something. If you are, I hope you get over it quick!

U maybe comin down with somethin but unless u took antibiotics u shouldnt be havin it that long besides the stress on your body.sorry and burr

acpollard, do you mean the partial shouldn't have lasted that long or the sickness I may/may not have? This is the first day I've felt unwell (other than epilepsy unwell).

The seizure itself shouldnt have was wat I meant

Oh right. I don't know much about the average duration so I'm keen to hear a bit more about it. The headache is still resisting the Advil I took so I'll check back in a little later. Appreciate all your comments!

Wobblez, going by the timeframe I'm assuming you mean it was a complex partial?
Simple partials don't last that long, maybe come and go, come and go, but not a straight one for 33 minutes.
I was going to say too, as an aura is a simple partial seizure, it makes sense when you say you had lots during the day that at some point you'd have a long complex (even though 33 minutes is too long for one of those as well; how are your meds working?)
I feel for you having to deal with the complex's, I'm just straight simples and the odd time they go right into a TC. And I'm getting to know by the length of time of a simple what my odds are that a big one is coming.
If it's not over within at least 45 seconds then it's a BAD one and if it's anywhere between one and two minutes then the probability of a TC so far is about 95%.

Hi Qtowngirl,

I didn't know if it qualified as a complex, it's hard for me to say if my memory/awareness or consciousness were compromised. Although i've realised that even when I think I remember everything, witnesses seem to have a slightly different version. I had text my mum saying I was going in to one because I was alone so I also had a record of the time. Does it become a complex purely because of the duration? I'm really not sure what they were but they definitely started with auras.

I've just slept for 2.5hrs but I think I may have had another one. I felt more auras and twitches as I fell asleep.

My medication isn't working. I've been having more and more seizures since late January. Before that, 200mg/d of Lamictal had made me feel the best I've ever been! Not even an aura for 5 months! I'm not sure why it's spiked but at least I've had the EEG and see an epileptologist for the first time in 9 days time.

I'm really glad you have some predictability and you can deal with your seizures more effectively. Do you feel yourself going into a tonic clonic?

Wobblez, if you can feel yourself going into one then it sounds like a simple partial followed by a complex partial. And no, I wouldn't say a complex is decided on purely because of duration, it's more regarding what happens to you during the seizure. From all the literature I've ever read on complex partials you will come out of it either completely unaware that it happened, or almost completely unaware, and the same for the events that took place during it.
But I can tell you with 110% certainty that SIMPLE partials do not last 33 minutes. When you say you didn't know if it qualified as a complex, I'm wondering if maybe you're having a different type of seizure altogether? The BEST thing ever is that you're on board to see an epileptologist, they are so much more educated than a neurologist and know their seizures, meds, etc. like the back of their hands.
As for me with predictability I would say my 'luck' with that is purely because I've had them for so long and I too, know them like the back of my hand. 18 years is so long, too bloody long, and as 3 of the 5 tonic-clonics I've had have been the result of a simple partial, the only way I guess I could say I 'might know' a tonic-clonic is coming on is as i said before, the simple lasts for a minute or two. That is NOT normal. But no, one does not feel themselves going into a big one; one minute you're doing whatever you're doing and the next you wake up in a daze either wondering WTF just happened or going, 'oh great, another one, here we go again.'
I'm only 33, I just don't want to know what my future holds if I don't do something about it. Right now it's a toss up between doubling the lamotrigine (just started three days ago) or looking at brain surgery (hippocampal sclerosis). C'MON lamotrigine!!!
I'm glad to hear the drug, at least at one time, worked for you too... best of luck with the upcoming appt!!

With a simple partial it's all about weird sensory stuff, but you remain conscious and aware the whole time. With a complex partial there's loss of awareness -- the lights are on but nobody's home. A simple partial can turn into a complex partial, and either one can turn into a tonic-clonic (though this doesn't happen for everyone).

When I have simple partial seizures, they last between 2-3 minutes. It comes with the following:

Feeling of something isnt right
I get tingling in my left hand and foot which spreads to my upper body
Heart begins to race
I get a feeling of fear that overcomes me
My stomach feels like someone punched me there and I get sick to my stomach
My head turns to the right
My body stiffens and jerks
Im awake during all of this, but after its over, I have a huge headache and I feel sore and tired.

Hi momof3boys. I get all of the above. I am reasonably aware of my surroundings but I feel trapped in my body that won't work. I can't get anyone's attention. When I had a 15minute one on wednesday night, followed by two shorter ones, it's all a bit of a blur but I do distinctly remember parts of it. So confusing. At least my flatmate recorded it so I have something to show the Epileptologist. I haven't watched them yet. Not sure if I want to.

Status epilepticus exists for every type of seizure. If you look it up, simple status epilepticus is not supposed to be that harmful unless it leads to worsening/ gereralizing of your seizures.
I often feel possible seizures that last for days and write them down in my journal. They do not affect my ability to interact/ work/ think. I assume they originate near my amygdala and affect my sense of fear and memory as I feel very abnormal. Who knows.

Its a weird feeling. I never had those kind of seizures til a year ago when I went in for my VEEG. All those years before, I was controlled with Keppra and Carbatrol, and those two medications controlled my seizures very well. So i was suprised when the seizures started and I was aware of what was going on during them. My mom was there with me, and she kept giving me this suprised look, like she had no clue what was going on. After the first one, I remember looking at her thinking what was that? I never was consious before during a seizure. So to feel that tingling and the feeling of fear, and how my stomach got to feel like I wanted to puke, was just weird feeling. I had more during my time there, and then more when I got home. I got released on a friday morning, and the next morning after waking up, I was having seizures every 5 minutes for half an hour. It freaked me out, and my mom who called the dr. I had to be given a ativan and I rested the entire day. I hope things get better for you! :)

I been experiencing simple I guess, no tonic/clonic to my knowledge, Im sure I would know something strange happend. They seem to last atleast 30 mins or longer; Its starts as a warm rush from my head down to my stomach, then the sensation that I cant breath or as if something heavy is on my chest, (sometimes I see stars just before it happens, or get this eerie eerie feeling. sometimes I get a surge and if it strikes me as funny, i start laughing, but if it makes me jumpy, nervouse, scared, heart racing, i cry) . I try concentrating real hard on other things to make it pass or not to lose it. My muscles hurt and feel stiff. Its hard to move arms. It's only hard to move legs if Im walking. It feels like im wrapped up like a mummy. Last few weeks, the newest symptom, is the stomach pain, both left and right side, not in the center yet. I forgot to mention the naucious feeling, it seems that one never goes away. I too, am very lathargic and exhausted afterwards. I noticed that as long as I am nibbling every half hour or so, I dont have these episodes. Guess thats why Im gaining weight.

For those that feel they have seizures a half hour or longer try having someone else time your seizures if you haven't already.

When I was very young I used to think my seizures were between 1 & 2 hours long when in fact they were only between 30 and 45 seconds. Ones sense of time during a seizure is often badly distorted.

More recently I've tried timing my seizures but by the time the seizure is over I"m too confused to remember what time the seizure started at.

I had something between an aura and sp that lasted about 8 hours, happened a few times.

that sucked.

my last maybe 2 mins.

they start out as simple partial (deja vu)

then absence seizure - staring into space, can hear people talking, know where I'm at but I can not respond. I will swallow hard for several times, feels like I can't breath --but I can.

I used to have a lot of seizures when I was on phenob. along with dilantin.

Now that I'm on dilantin and clonazepam along with B-6, B-12, fish oil

my last seizure was in Oct. 2011 when new neur. try new medic.

Hi Chris,
We were talking about this on here yesterday. As Endless and I were saying, we were both told by our epileptologists that auras and simple partials are the same thing. Have you ever talked to your neuro about it?

And 8 hours definately doesn't sound right, simples only last between 10 seconds and a few minutes at most. Was it that they came and went, came and went, without much space in between? If not and it really was continual I would suggest making an appt. asap with your neuro.
Wobblez had one that was 33 minutes and after we said that wasn't right she went to the hospital and they figured it could have been status and put her on diazepam straight away.

Sorry my dear, trying to help, not to scare. Only want to see everyone on here get the proper help they deserve. All the best...
