zonegran-generic versus namebrand

i am currently taking the generic of this drug zonegran. but i still have breakthrough seizures at 200mg. i am wondering if i switch to the namebrand if the outcome will be the same, i had this problem on generic topamax along with headaches. does anyone else have problems taking the generic form of this drug to where they have to take only the name brand as well?

I was on the generic of Zonegran without any seizure control problems, although I was affected by what it did to my stomach and my appetite.

It is a common problem. I am on Keppra, when I tried generic, I got massive migraines. After changing back to brand name...no problem. My neuro has it on file to only request brand name on my prescriptions.
It is definitely worth switching back to see if it cures the problem, best of luck!

generic zonegran versus namebrand

i have never tried the namebrand in the zonegran so this will be the first time i have tried it. so switching back to it won't be a issue. I will however know if it works or not after the first couple days because i have never went more than a couple "good" days without a seizure. if i can go more than two days without a seizure and it's while on the namebrand then obviously it's the namebrand that's working and not the generic. i was just curious if anyone else had this same problem. my doctor started me out on the generic first thinking it might work.

I was on Zonisamide (generic) until they came up with
so many generic formulas that was asinine because of
the fluctuations within, I never knew what generic brand
I would be on the "next month". But before that, it used
to be just 2 generic manufacturers and things were peachy,
until all these (I think there are 17 of them) generic makers
came along - and my seizures were like a roller coaster.

That was then the decision of enough was enough, for it
was already proven that Zonisamide worked; so my Doctor
himself put me on Zonegran and it worked wonders. While
it is true I was on 500 mg a day with .5 Clonazepam (generic
for Klonopin) and 2 mg of Folic Acid (generic for Folate) - and
seizures were controlled but due to the lab report results;
the Zonegran was sky high - which was why I was bough back
down to 400 mg a day.

I have no side effects at all with Zonegran (nor did I with
Zonisamide at first before all these generics came along).


Usually Zonegran / Zonisamide is an adjunctive medication to
another Anti-Epileptic drug; it isn't typically used as a main
Anti-Epileptic Drug. Moreover, it is interesting to know that
many Neurologists and Epileptologists do not like this drug
(it belongs to the Sulfate family) as many people have or
develop sulfate allergy; and plus the high risk for stones - thus
the need to drink a lot of water.

The other problematic issue is weight loss - I never had any
weight loss with this drug since taking it in 2005 (?) and the
dosage remains unchanged with the exception of the short
span of 500 mg; it had always been 200 mg B.I.D. (x 2).

But as I have posted many times:

Every Anti-Epileptic Drug effects everyone differently, and
everyone reactions varies. So one cannot compare so and
so to this person and that person, for our own bodies are
unique, for we are all like a snowflake - no two of us are alike.

I am on Zonisamide. But I have always been on it. I don't really have any side affects on it that I can notice.I don't eat a whole lot .
