Karen, I've been learning and theorizing about vitamin D deficiency and how vitamin D stimulates innate immunity, balancing flora. People are taking very large doses with apparent safety and success.
All focus on vitamin D deficiency is on sunshine and diet in disregard of microbial production of vitamin D precursors as well as microbial enzymes leading to vitamin D degradation causing deficiency. Not factored is UV effect on flora as if skin magically produces vitamin D in sunlight. Vitamin D raises intracellular calcium which raises innate immunity, stimulating macrophage activity to balance flora; quite a circular effect of vitamin D, a hormonal messenger.
