Melissa,
Your doc (and counselor) are suffering from a lack of information. They simply are not well educated on epilepsy. You need to see an epi. They are a specialist in your disorder.
The first neurologist I saw thought I was a nut, too. Actually, she thought I was hormonal. How wrong, and insulting. And I clearly had pretty typical temporal lobe seizure symptoms, as I learned later from the epi. Never in my wildest dreams could I have had that wild list of symptoms due to hormones or on a random basis. They are too off the wall. (Jamais vu, going unconcious and saying and doing wacky stuff, smelling weird stuff that isn't there, feeling a hand on my back that isn't there, seizures with intense fear, etc.)
I finally saw an epi who knew what was wrong with me within a few minutes - right after he read my list of symptoms. Then some testing followed and now I'm getting the right treatment.
So, don't give up. Belmont is a fairly big town, and you are very close to NY city. If you can get your primary care provider to refer you to a regional epilepsy center, you should get a good evaluation there. Is your primary care doc helpful, or not so helpful?
