I'm 28/male and I have never had a seizure, so far as I'm aware. However for about 6 years now I've had some undiagnosed problem that causes an assortment of symptoms, chief among them is this constant "head pressure." Other symptoms include brain fog, chronic fatigue, ringing in left ear, tingling, sugar/alcohol intolerance, cold intolerance, dry eyes, the list goes on. The head pressure is the worst symptom, I just have to live with it for most of the day (sometimes eating/exercise can reduce it, but it comes back quickly), and nothing supplemental or dietary seems to do anything for it. Well but that is only some basic backstory, the reason I'm here is in the next paragraph.

I'm here now because for the last month or so, occasionally when I wake up in the morning--and not at any other time, ONLY when I wake up in the morning--I will notice my vision is just "not right." Things seem to have slightly more "jagged lines" and may appear "sharper" and sometimes a tiny bit wavy, but the waviness is nearly imperceptible. The longest this has ever lasted was about 2 minutes. Usually it only lasts for 30 seconds or less. Sometimes I will notice numbness along with the visual oddity, the numbness appears to be random, and its not total, its more like "reduced sensation" say on my arm or back. I also notice the times when I get this visual oddity, my head pressure is really bad. But... there is no migraine that follows, and no black outs, and no seizure. The whole thing goes away within a minute and then I'm back to normal.

I'm asking if this could be an epileptic aura, or perhaps more like an aura without migraine (I've read these exist)..? The concern is they are happening more frequently, and I want to be sure it's not a sign of epilepsy. I do take Paxil and have for many years, I've recently switched to generic, and it's also true that the first time I got this problem I was on Paxil. "Abnormal vision" is a listed but uncommon side effect for Paxil.. but what does not fit: why is it I would usually only get this vision thing a couple times a year, and now I'm getting it at least once a week??

My brother was recently diagnosed with epilepsy at 32 and he gets tonic clonic seizures, this is why I'm so concerned about myself. He had his first seizure at 32, and he tells me never noticed any odd sensations before then. Also, his auras dont seem to be anything like my strange waking phenomenon, he describes his aura as dizziness, lightheadness, and deja vu.

I'm thinking there could be a genetic tendency, although oddly, neither parent, nor ANY relatives on either side of our family, has had a seizure. Could excessive caffeine use also cause something like what I'm describing... perhaps this could be from constricted blood vessels? Could this be hypnopompia, where I wake up before my brain is "ready"?

In any event, I'm dealing with a lot of stress these days being prone to anxiety in the first place, and now seeing my brother get 1-2 tonic clonic seizures every week (this is a new development, before it was just once every 1.5 months or so), it's not a pleasant sight. Now I've got concerns for myself, due to these sensations I get when waking, wondering if I'm developing epilepsy. Or am I paranoid, worrying myself to death, just making the anxiety worse? What do you guys think?

Sorry for the long post,
Bill Z.

No need to apologize for a long post :D

I personally cannot help you as I have no ideas what could be happening to you but I am positive someone here can help you. The only thing I know is that on my first visit to my neurologist he asked me if I ever have strange visual occurences but this was after my EEG showed abnormalities. Have you asked your doctor what could be happening?

I hope someone here is able to answer your question soon and I hope that things work out for you and your brother!!

Hi Bill --

A lot of what you describe does sound like what might arise from abnormal firing of neurons, but it's hard to know for sure. Both with migraine aura and with a kind of seizure called Simple Partial, there isn't necessarily a headache that follows or convulsions. In fact the majority of epilepsies don't involve convulsions with loss of consciousness.

Often seizure disorders an change and escalate, so perhaps that is happening with you. Your best bet is to see your doctor and arrange to be evaluated and perhaps have an EEG. I recommend that you take detailed notes about what you're experiencing, and pay attention as well to any changes in diet, metabolism, environment, stress that might be triggering your symptoms.

Best,
Nakamova

Hi Bill, welcome to our group. This place is full of wonderful supportive people that either have E or have a family member, or have lost a family member from E. It is a great group! I hope you encourage your brother to join us. In either case, this is a wonderful group to help you with working and understanding your brother's E
.I got diagnosed 2 years ago at age 47. My father had two big seizures when he was in his 40s, but has been seizures free since and he will be 77 in a few months.
I asked my doctor if there could be a herditary connection with my E, although my seizures are completely different from my father's seizures. i have both simple (Auras) and complex partials. He said there is a possiblity of herediaty in E, however he encouraged me to learn more about E and all the causes, how common it really is and more about my own seizures.
Are you seeing a doctor or neuro, have they done any test. Tests are not the definite answer in diagnosing E...my neuro said 40% of his patients have E but yet never showed postitive on any EEG, etc. I would encourage you to see a doctor. The big thing I have learned here is it is a great place to discuss concerns and if people think what you are going thru is a sign of need for medical attention, you are encourage to call your doctor. I would think a neuro would be better to determine if this is E, a sign of your meds or maybe an inner ear problem. Please follow up with your doctor and let us know what you find out. No problem with long posts...we all have our moments that we need to put own feelings down...see, I just did it too! Jenn

Thanks for the responses.

I have not been to a doctor about the waking visual oddity. Reason being is lack of health insurance. Without insurance, it makes it difficult to see a neurologist or get an EEG, etc. It looks like I will either have to find a way to get health insurance, or just "wait it out and hope it goes away."

I *have* recently been to a doctor about rapid heartbeat and other things, but that was before I was getting these visual episodes consistently. So I'm waiting for the results from the bloodwork he prescribed.

I have found two possible causative links, though. One of them is a disrupted, poor sleep schedule, not exactly sleep deprivation, but more like sleeping at odd times and getting poor quality sleep. That seems to make it more likely to happen. The other one is fish oil. I take a lot of supplements and added DHA Fish Oil a couple months ago. A month into that, suddenly I started getting the waking visual thing every week, sometimes 3 times a week. So then I decided to drop the fish oil, and it *seemed* like frequency of these episodes decreased. But who knows. However, I seem to get a cognitive benefit, more energy, and other subtle benefits so I decided to get back on the oil again. And of course fast forward to now, I keep getting this damn thing when I wake up.

I really don't know what to do. Am I supposed to worry or not, etc.

You might want to try flax oil instead. The benefits are similar, but the chances of impurities are less. (It's also better for the environment, since the majority of fish oil comes from one fish -- the menhaden -- whose number have been drastically depleted by the fish oil companies.)

I woke up with it again today, and tried to notice how it manifests itself more carefully, it seems like it's more like my eyes are severely out of focus. Looking at the lines on my pillow, for example, the lines appear to flicker, but it seems it's because my eyes can't stay focused on any one spot. The other thing is that the phenomenon gets worse or better depending on what position I'm sitting/lying when it happens. If I'm lying down on my left side with my head pressed into the pillow, it seems it keeps getting worse, if I sit up, it seems to go away quickly.

I'm wondering if these findings might suggest it fits better in the headache/migraine aura category?

It does sound like migraine auras I've experienced in the past (in my pre-seizure days). But the distinction between migraine aura and simple partial has gotten a bit fuzzy lately, especially if you do have a seizure disorder/lowered seizure threshold.

I'm only 25 and I understand no insurance = No doctors

Is it undiagnosed because you have not been to a doctor for it?

Has it been getting worse in the last few months or weeks?

Hi all,

Yes it's undiagnosed because I haven't been to a doctor about it. I don't have the money to see specialists or get expensive tests run.

It has been getting worse in the last few months, especially the last two weeks, not so much in duration (typically 30-60 seconds), but simply in frequency.

Starting around 18 years old I would get it about 2 times a year on average, possibly not at all some years. I'm now 28, and it began showing up 2-3 times per *week* about 1.5 months ago. I wondered if it could be linked to taking a new supplement--I take about 8 different vitamins/supplements per day--and I realized the newest one I was taking was DHA fish oil. So I quit that, and it seemed like the frequency of this flare-up was decreasing. But then I missed the cognitive benefits of the DHA oil so I went back on it, now this last week or so I wake up with the vision problem every other day.

So, once again, I've quit the DHA oil.. starting yesterday. If the frequency decreases again, I might have to conclude that there's something about this supplement that doesn't agree with me. If not, then of course I'll have to look for other clues in my diet or vitamin regimen, and try to stabilize my sleep patterns, and see what happens there. Then there is also my anxiety problem, which has gotten worse in recent weeks.

Like we all say you should go to a doctor...

But Anyway,
I'm not a pro in anything, Well I am the greatest dad ever to a couple little ones..

Ok now,
your symptoms and some case studies I have come across lately kind of match. ( kinda like a hobby of mine) I would like to narrow it down to answer your question of what i think.

Is your vision getting worse or bad?
Does your brother where glasses?
Or more like a certain side of your family?

Dear RC,

I am uncertain where you are going with this? I hope you are not going to tell me this indicates some serious health problem that needs to be checked out? Remember I do not have epilepsy.. my brother does. I'm here to ask if this strange vision problem I keep getting seems like some kind of aura, or if it might be something else.

In any event, to answer your question, yes we have terrible myopia on my father's side. My father is myopic, my brother is very myopic, and I'm almost as bad. All three of us wear glasses. Of my father's six siblings, I think four are near-sighted and wear glasses or contacts. My vision still gets slightly worse over time, but I have not noticed any sharp declines lately.

lemme know

Hi Bill,

I am sorry for the directive questions.
Interrogation, That is not what this web-site is about.
I do speak a lot of nonsense tho. heck, I never made it past 8th grade...

As of today I agree that-- All medical information and advice online should be considered to be incomplete without talking to your doctor and/or licensed health professional

I was told about seizures with a unknown cause (that is what I have) and it does not make any sense to me.
So Now, because of that I like to learn about biopsychology with the field of neuroscience.

So I am still trying to think of an ideal answer. (As to "What do you guys think?")

Well, where exactly where you heading?

Have recent studies found a link between myopia and epilepsy, or something?

I have not read anything like that.
