Hello all, well last friday at work i had a witnessed tonic clonic lasting 5mins. I have no recollection of the event other than a brief awareness of the inside of the ambulance. It states on my discharge that I was post ictal for an hour in a&e before they released me with instructions to come back at 9am for a ct scan. I returned to work to grab my stuff and drove home confused and sore in every muscle, as it turned out I showed dai (concussion) on my scan, but the fact the hospital staff were told I head butted the concrete, with the black eye and brused face to show shouldve made that clear! Other than that i bit my tongue rather bad but am healing well. I had a strong aura, but now im having the odd dizzy spell and feeling sensitive to bright lights, im hoping its just the concussion and not auras. Im 33, and a stairmaker so powertools, tablesaws, ladders etc are my life! And i love kayaking and spearfishing so naturaly im rather worried about what my eeg will show.

welcome shaun :)
do you have epilepsy, been diagnosed? or this was your first t/c?
either way you've come to the right place, we just like info so we know who can/and how we can help.

No havnt been diagnosed, they took blood samples at a&e and all was fine ct scan showed no tumors etc so im under the understanding that eeg is the next step and my gp has referred me for one some time over the next few weeks. About a year ago i was driving and my right leg stopped working so i pulled over and let my bro drive, by the time we got to the shop it had spread to my left arm, it kept lifting up by its self but was easy to pull down with my other arm and i jammed it in my pocket while i went into the shop, i couldnt talk other than short sharp grunts kinda "ak ak ak" which were almost involentry but then it past. I told the doctor about it when i went for my ct scan and she said if i didnt lose concessness it prob wasnt a seizure? But im not sure.

Hi shaun, welcome!

The EEG may give the neurologist some more information to go on, but you should definitely mention the episode from a year ago. The doc you talked to about it then was wrong -- it could definitely be a seizure, probably what's called a Complex Partial. Those can feature myoclonus (muscle spasms/jerking) and speech problems. Let the neurologist know if there have been any other other unusual sensations/symptoms over the past year.

Feel free to check in here with any questions.

Best,
Nakamova

nak is right shaun, that doc (what kind of doctor was this?) was so wrong.
there are over 40 types of seizures, and what happened with you is classic symptoms, so not sure where the hell they got their degree, but no. def let the neuro know.

All i can say is thank you so much for this forum, im from small town New Zealand so not too sure about the quality of our healthcare professionals. well i guess the ed did their job, patched me up, checked for tumors and kicked me out the door to follow up with my gp. Im keeping notes now, i also get deja vu alot, so bad it almost feels like i can almost pick whats going to happen next but i always thought that was normal. Overall im humbled by some of the storys ive read here, theres some amazing strong people.

Shaun, I'm sorry but are you saying the hospital let you drive home after you had a tonic-clonic seizure? In the UK you wouldn't be allowed to drive AT ALL for six months. Surely they have similar laws in NZ?

yea im still alittle stumped cos the ct machine was broken on the friday when i arrived by ambo, so they sent me home with instructions to return at 9am for a scan, they didnt even write any of it down for me until i got my discharge paper after the scan the following day! That said i was post ictal for an hour and mostly seemed the neurologist was happy the concussion was caused by the seizure and not the other way around. Said i was neurologicly intact and that i was aware i shouldnt drive, use dangerous machinery or bath alone. I have no idea when i was told that! It was hard enough remembering what i had to go back for! And yea i checked our transport laws and its 12months.. Im guessing its their job to deal with the emergancy and leave the follow up health care to me and my gp.

isn't it great to be bombarded with the most technical and clinical facet of the world's knowledge while just hitting postictal? brain of a drunk 5 year old and you get bombarded with cacophonous medical gibberish that you feel has to do with the final few moments you have on earth - or what seems like it at least. either that or you hope that it does, to relieve you from the pain and confusion.
respect to the med techs etc. but man what a shitty time period - and "no" that ambulance part doesn't get any better - or at least never really has for me
in a way I'd rather wake up face-down in the gutter. at least it would be darker, quieter, more calm, fewer impossible questions- year? how would I know what year it is? - idk! Reagan?

Hmm since ild never had a grand mal before i didnt know what an aura was but when my brain started skipping like a scatched cd and i couldnt form complete thoughts i remember my last thought being "oh f### im having a stroke" and that thought was still there when i came out of the amnesia but somehow the med staff must have explained what had happend cos i came round just being happy it wasnt a stroke. It was the most crazy feeling tho, one minute im fine nxt thing i felt like ild been hit by a train. Its scared the heck outa me, im eating healthy, taking a multi vitamin, early nights, no drinking so far so good, big changes but ive had some dizzy spells and im not sure how long i can stay positive just never knowing if/when it'll happen again, its maddening
!

Seizures are scary but try not to let yourself focus on the seizures focus on the new day. I know grand mals are rough I have been through to many to count. start a journal to keep track of things that happen like your dizzy spells and be sure to take it to the DR. when you go.

Just got a brief result from my eeg in the mail, it was from my gp as he sent me for the eeg. all it said is some minor "short circuiting in the right side of my brain" that most likely caused my t/c. It advised me not to take any drugs (i do smoke alittle pot, well used to!) And if i drink only have a very small amount. It also said if i have anymore seizure type activity i may need to see a "brain speicalist" and try meds. And said if i have any questions to come in for an appointment! I have a million questions! Wish he didnt dumb it down so much but guess hes not giving much away for free! Any help with what i need to be asking would be great thanks anyone.
