Hey everyone! I'm shannon and i have Epilepsy since age 2. I'm now 19. I've pretty much beat the odds of what medical science told me. Except one thing. Academics. I'm a fairly good student, in regular and honor classes but wants to ask a couple of questions that may some people could answer if you had Epilepsy in Middle-childhood? Cool. :brain:

Did you find it difficult as a child to concentrate?
Where studying aggravating?
Studying for hours, than forgeting everything that you read. What do you think caused that?
Was Math harder than usual?
Did you miss a lot of school because of Epilepsy? If so, do you feel like you lack basic skills?

Thank you so much guys, this is for my research for a college class and also for myself:e:

Hi Tower2, I didn't develop epilepsy until my 30s so I can't answer your questions, but I did want to welcome you to CWE. We have a forum for teenagers, so you might want to explore that as well.

Best,
Nakamova

Hi Shannon, welcome to the forum. :hello:

I know plenty of people who don't have epilepsy who would answer Yes to most of your questions.

Your fire department hired you even though you have epilepsy?

Hello!
I've had seizures since I was about 3 yrs old. Went through a period of time without seizures ( ages 5-13) and then had them start up again. I'm now in my 30's. As for academics, I was always an a-b student. As for math, I did well in algebra and struggled with geometry (which is actually typical with kids...strength in one and difficulty with the other). Language Arts were my strength.
Studying was not difficult for me in any way. My parents made sure that during the summers I stayed busy by reading and working on math.
I now have a bachelors and masters degree. I teach middle school Special Ed.
Do I still have seizures? Yes.
I have grand mal (aka tonic clonic) seizures. And yes, I've had them in class in front of the kids. I combat the fear they can cause by talking to the kids on the first day of each semester about epilepsy and what it can look like. I talk about what mine look like specifically, and how to help me if they see me have one. I've found that kids and adults handle them quite well if they know what to do ahead of time. :)

I've been in remission for about 8 years now * knock on wood* and I take Tegratol and Nueroton to manage it

I had/have the same problems too

I've had E since i was about 9 and I am 41 now. I was a good student As and Bs with some honors classes, but I had and still have a tough time concentrating for long periods of time. However, I learned to adapt by working in spurts, trying to avoid procrastination, taking care of my body and getting a good nights sleep. All of that seemed to make my concentration issues easier to manage.

I hope this helps.
