Hi,
This is my first experience with this kind of chat. I have a brother, Jack, who has had seizures for nearly the last 40 years. He has grand-mals if anything interrupts his meds, and has intermittent smaller seizures randomly. He has done amazingly well for himself in spite of all the social impacts that he has faced since their onset when he was 10 years old. For over 22 years, he was employed by a relatively small home improvement company and had the benefit of their group insurance. He bought a condominium about 18 years ago and primarily lives on his own. He likes being independent and has gotten along well using public transportation or walking to about anything he wants to do. Last May- 2010- he was laid off from his job and has been on unemployment for the months since. Our father is helping him with payments for his cobra insurance- obviously the cost of meds for epilepsy is not new to any of you! He has been trying very hard to find a new job but has had no success. Are there organizations that help people with epilepsy find a job? Are there sources of help that you can point us to? Jack is very shy, not very assertive, and due to his history of grand-mals has suffered some brain damage which his doctor (Neurologist) has said allows him to function on about a middle school level when it comes to many social types situations. With the unemployment situation what it is at this time, my family is more and more concerned about what he will do in the future. So far, he has kept up his spirits and continues to go to the library utilizing their computers to apply for jobs and file for his weekly unemployment checks. He has a very willing to work outlook, and is just like many- very frustrated about having no job to go to. I worry that he will begin to feel he lacks purpose in life. Can anyone advise us on ways to get him help finding employment?

Hi Jackssister, welcome!

It's great that you are looking out for your brother. I know how important can be to feel independent, so I hope he is able to find something soon. Is there a local epilepsy support group? That may be one place to start. And any city, county, or state social services agencies with programs for job training and placement. The economy does make it tough, so perhaps in the meantime your brother could work with a volunteer group? It can be a great way to feel useful, stay connected, and possibly even get job leads.

Best,
Nakamova

First it would all depend on where he is located. Most places in canada have a disability services that can help with job placement.

He does NOT have to tell anyone that he has seizures while he is applying. If they ask, that is illegal. He can tell them once he is hired or offered the job. He can also try looking for temp jobs for the time being while looking for a full time one.

Jackssister,

Welcome! What a great brother you have. He sounds like he has a lot of determination.

Try calling 2-1-1 to get hooked into any local social resources near you. It's a great resource.
