hi im new to all this and looking for some advice,
quick back ground update, 16 month daughter was having alot! of 'day dreams' she then after a few months took 2 bad episodes and we took her to doctor who said she is having absence seizures and or seizures of some sort, my wee one already attends the neonatal clinic for her albinism so we have app to see them in june, just waiting to hear if they will want to see her quicker or not,
on monday there she took another bad turn in her buggie in a taxi and she has not been the same since, ive called the doctor who wants to see my wee girl just to check her over,
was looking for some advice or info on absence seizures and what children are like after them as my wee girl has really not been the same since monday shes been very quite and confused looking and restless, is this normal??? she sleeps for 12 hours thro night and she sleeps for 3 to 3 and half hours during the day again is this normal???
her symptoms are typical absence seizure symptoms but the more worrying ones have her slumped over to her left unable to lift her head or left arm she will cry just before slumping as tho she is uncomfortable and then she will stop crying and a min or 2 later she is out it, are these more stronger absence seizures or a different seizure all together??? any advice will be great just one worried mum thanx

hi mummyofthree, welcome!

As you've noted, absences appear more like daydreaming -- it's as if someone has very quickly flipped off and on the power switch in the brain. Absences don't usually involve slumping or prolonged after-effects, so I think you're right to be concerned that she's having a different kind of seizure (perhaps a complex partial), or that something else is going on.

Phenylketonuria can cause both albinism and seizures. I assume it's been ruled out (most babies are tested for it automatically at birth), but thought I'd ask...

I hope you get things figured out soon. Have you been referred to a neurologist?

Best,
Nakamova

I have frontal lobe seizures, and they involve absence seizures, as well as more complicated ones. It is possible that it is a profession of her seizures. Frontal Lobe seizures can cause random crying or laughing for no apparent reason. I know being a mom that babies will randomly cry or laugh at things we don't understand, but if it is followed by a seizures, it may be related. After an absence seizure, I tend to be confused for a few seconds, but that's not something that usually lasts long for me. Please remember, everyone's seizures effect them differently. My experience may not be the same as your baby's. If it is frontal lobe, they strike more at night, which could explain her sleeping so much. I spend most of my days being flat out exhausted. That also tends to make me more likely to have more seizures during the day.

I would recommend Googling Epilepsy Symptoms in infants and see what you come up with for explanations, or possible explanations. This will give you a good idea of things to bring up with a Neurologist, or even her pediatrician.

I hope this helps. Please, also remember, it tends to be worse on the people watching their loved ones having a seizure than it is for the person having them. Stay strong, and I wish y'all the best of luck with all of this.
