So I was at my regular Buddhist temple where I meditate most days at noon. A few years ago had a Tonic Clonic there. Then Wednesday a complex partial that knocked me over on the floor (albeit from sitting) and then, I am told, groaned and asked for help from Mardi (my girlfriend sitting right there.). Yeah what a way to disrupt a room full of meditaters!! Is it all hopeless? And now I am having "shaking" arms/hands I always had that a little in left arm from TBI damage . But now worse. I fear its the known side-effects from Depakote and lamotragin Onset of PARKINSON'S DISEASE. Do I have shakes for life? what is there to do?

Hello Janus
I too have tremors in my hands-arms, also have a pretty good bobble head at times. It started with my left hand and has progressively gotten worse. I was told by one neurologist it was Parkinsons, but went to a movement disorder specialist & he thought as opposed to Parkinsons it might be drug induced. He switched me from carbatrol to Keppra and from prozac to zoloft. That seemed to help a little bit but after about 6 months, I had to go back to the prozac, couldnt tolerate the zoloft. It has steadily gotten worse to where if I am busy with something or if I am walking, my left hand starts fluttering. They still dont think it is Parkinsons but I dont think anybody has a clue yet. I guess I"ll always be just a shaky old man. Hope you find some answers

Too early to panic, Janus :) Discuss things with your neurologist, and if you aren't satisfied with answers you receive, etc. ask to see a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders (Parkinson's is only one of many) to get more conclusive answers. Good luck!

Hi Janus,
When I was taking Depakote it would make my hands shake even when I wasn't having a seizure. I found out that I needed to cut back on the caffeine and starch foods along with the sugar and then the shaking stopped a lot. Years later I went off the Depakote and started taking Diamox and that did wonders for me. Now once in a great while I will have a complex partial seizure and my body will shake a little but nothing like it did while on Depakote. I wish you only the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Sue

Is Parkinson's disease really a potential side-effect of Depakote and Lamictal?
