Baby hamsters :D

Hey all!
a couple of months ago me and my housemate bought 2 russian dwarf hamsters, and the guys at Pets At Home sexed them as girls, well they definately were not two girls unless one changed sex because Lily gave birth to a litter last night! lol
We can see 3 babies, there might be 4. We have seperated the two of them and stuff but does anyone have any tips on how to keep an eye on how they are doing?
I know that we are meant to leave them alone but we have never had this before and I dont wanna casue harm to them if there is anything that we should do?

Just make sure you are adding more food than usual. mama will be hungry. Plus keep lots of water in the and trade from wood shaving to newspaper strips for a bit. You want to be able to clean sections without disturbing the new babies. Also keep some tolet paper tubes in there. It will let mama keep babies out of sight and out of light. as their eyes are not ocmpletely develped.

Congrats on the new hamsters.

I beat they'll be cute as they grow.

My parents have bunnies. At the moment they have 5 adult bunnies (3 males & 2 females) & 6 babies. One of the girls Millie had a litter of 6 babies 5 weeks ago. The babies are gorgeous & all 11 rabbits have their own personality. When the baby bunnies are old enough they will be going to new homes. My Dads dog Lilly likes to keep an eye on the rabbits to make sure they are ok & has never attempted to hurt them lol.

We've never had guinea pigs but I know with the rabbits it isn't always easy to work out their gender lol.

Don't touch the babies because if the parent's smell another scent of them excepting their own, they will kill them. It's an old defence mechanism to protect from predators.

Just make sure that all you do in the cage is to change the water and the food, and if you really have to clean the cage, then steer clear of the bedding where the babies are.

When the babies are weaned and starting to eat for themselves - this can take 4-6 weeks - then you will need to find out what sex they are, and then separate them, as they can starting breeding very early. The mother and father should be separated as the mother will be able to breed again pretty quickly.

I'm sure you don't want any more babies just yet!

I've always just had 1 hamster at a time, so no babies here.

But I learned the female hammy goes into heat every 4 days. Isn't that wild? And the incubation period is like 2 1/2 weeks. So you know what to do if you don't want anymore babies.

I had hamsters when I was a child, be careful though and feed the mother a lot.

One of the coolest things I've ever seen a hungry mother hamster, but coming from the fact that I believe most people have an unhealthy attachment towards lesser animals. You might not like it so much.

Thought i would give a little update

The little ones are doing really well (we call the hamsters 'the mini's' cause we have cats too, so the babies are now 'the mini-mini's'!)

We have been able to see them a lot more because Lily (the mummy) is leaving them uncovered more and more when she leaves the nest. Though we only watch from a distance.

There is definately four of them, we cant see anymore but who knows... three seem to be growing brown fur and one white, which is so cute and they have the cutest teeny tiny little ears and feet! lol.

they seem to be getting more nad more active everyday and have definately found thier voices!

When they have grown a little more i will put some pictures up for everyone to see
