Hi everyone,

I got diagnosed with Epilepsy last Aug. I was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy. I've had a bad smell since last March. It can be a burning smell and other times just fowl. I have been on numberous medications. Currently I am on Neurontin, Tegretol, very small dose of klonipin and nortrypline ? Has anyone experienced this and did they get help with a medicine or other way.

thanks,
Laurie

Welcome Laurie, I've had phantom odors that lasted for days, maybe a week, but not that long. I would go crazy. Can they increase your klonipin or maybe try Ativan. Sometimes smelling something else is suppose to help. Maybe a citrus essential oil from the health food store. Just open the bottle and inhale or put 2-3 drops in your hand and rub them together and cup your hands over your nose and mouth. Frankincense is suppose to be good for seizures. I don't like the way it smells but I rub it on the bottoms of my feet. It is suppose to help. I have only had a few breif phantom odors since starting on Lamictial.

Let us know if you find something that helps since many of us have the same problem.

Margie

Hi Laurie --

I know a few members have had similar kinds of smell-based auras. As MAB says Klonopin is supposed to be good for olfactory auras, and I seem to remember that Topomax helped someone else. This NYTimes article also mentions surgery as an option: http://www.nytimes.com/1999/04/13/s...d-phantoms-may-be-at-work.html?pagewanted=all
