Ok, bit long winded but I'll try to explain symptoms etc.
About 2 years ago my Mother in law started to have "strange" episodes.
It starts just above her naval, she feels "Quivers" and the very urgent need to belch ! (Nice) Lol.
She says she feels vaque, distant, scared during this period.
She then goes very blank for about 10 seconds, and talks total gibberish and is very confused as she starts to come back.
Her Dr didn't really seem to know what was happening but gave her a medication called "Adalat" she has to bite on this capsule when she feels it starting, it stops it straight away and does not develope into a full blown "episode"
Adalat is used to treat heart conditions by relaxing the arteries and encouraging better blood flow, so how and why it works is beyond me. Although I have considered the placebo effect ?
He also sent her to see a neurologist.
Epilepsy was diagnosed despite no readings to confirm this on the tests.
She was put on Keppra, gradually increasing the doseage, this had no effect at all and the "Episodes" continued.
Keppra has had a dreadful effect on her personality, she is agitated, her attention span is zero, she is confused, can't remember people, places, family members, it is very distressing to see her like that
I took her to her last appointment with the consultant, I staight away asked for an explanation as to how a heart drug can stop an epileptic seizure, the answer was it can't. I explained about the Adalat and it seems neither of my in laws or their DR has considered mentioning it !
She is now having further tests to determine what is causing these "Episodes" and has been weaned off the Keppra, she is now on day 3 of no Keppra.
So after the long winded post to put you in the picture my question is
How long will it take for the effects of the Keppra to go away, will it go away or is it possible that being on the wrong drug has caused permanent damage ?
Thanks in advance
Lynn
