My 19 year old son Cody was diagnosed with generalized epilepsy/generalized onset seizures at age 14. Cody has experienced 3 types of seizures since being diagnosed..starting with grand mals..then atonic(drop seizures) and now myoclonic seizures. He has been on Depakote ER and Tegretol for a few years now with good seizure control, going months at a time without seizures now suddenly seizures are coming frequently..doing real good if we make it a week without a episode. Neurologist said his Depakote levels are low and not staying at a good therapeutic level causing the more frequent seizures..increased dosage 2 weeks ago..had blood work done on Monday..dr. called today to say his depakote levels are STILL low but can't tell us why. What gives? So worried and really stressing out about this loss of seizure control. Help!

Hi codysmom43,

Tegretol can decrease Depakote serum levels -- has is Tegretol dose changed recently? Is he taking any other medication (aside from the Tegretol), antibiotics, over-the counter meds, supplements, alcohol, anything like that? Have his habits or diet changed over the last few months?
