Alrighty, sooo spring is nearing and I was going to go on an organic sort of healthy detox type of diet for maybe 10 days. I stopped drinking alcohol, pop, and a ton of fried foods a month ago and feel soo much better. I just want to clear any harm I've done in the past year. I need to clean myself inside out! :) Hopefully I will maintain the healthy habits.

This "detox" consists of a lot of water, vegetables, fruits, a few nuts and olive oil. Not too much if any dairy, bread, or excess salt/sugar. I am not sure if a change in diet would effect my medicine.

I eat fairly heatlhy and only eat meat max 3 days of a week and it's usually for one meal. Tofu is my friend. So I don't think it will be a drastic change, and if anything it should be healthier.

Is grapefruit harmful for Tegretol and Lamictal? I don't think I will risk it. Do any of you guys know any good smoothie recipes? Salads? Is there anything else I should know about negative medicine interactions and food/diet/drinking a lot of water/detox-esque anything???

Love ya'll, jackie. :)

My suggestions would be to stay away from dairy. If you must, goat cheese and yogurt is much lower in casein than cow milk. Limit the fruits each day, pear being a good alternative to an apple. Perhaps add in some organic meat, but not much. No sugar, and be careful of soy (tofu). It is high in estrogen and if you see any increase in seizure activity connected to the time of the month, high estrogen excites the brain.

I agree with the grapefruit. It is known to decrease the effectiveness of many meds, so I would stay away. Do a search for smoothies and I am sure you will get a pile of suggestions. Blueberries being the best antioxidant. Salads can include anything and everything. Soups are also a great way to get the nutrients in without a lot of unhealthy additives.

Drink the 8 glasses of water that is suggested. Becareful of going overboard, which some people do because it also can reduce the effectiveness of your meds.

Good luck. I hope it lasts more than 10 days. It should be seen as a nutritional change, rather than as a diet.

Thanks Robin! I intend to eat healthy for the rest of my life. I slowly started dropping bad stuff.
Pop - dropped from7th grade during Lent.
Fried foods - mostly dropped since 10th grade
(some of our ethnic food I just loooove.)
Alcohol - actually started this year and caused more seizures, but I had a sick mind and thought it numbed my pain. It's cut from my diet in total.

I forgot to say that my main source of exercise will be swimming laps. Sooo Yeah. Is there anything that helps with energy? Any other form of exercise that anyone else does with epilepsy? I know swimming sounds crazy, but my seizures are small, I am fully conscious, 2-5 seconds max of pain. I've had seizures during a competition before. ((I beat every single girl in that race by a whole lap...needless to say I wanted out of that pool!)) hahaha.

ok here is something to add to your thoughts. There is a concern at other neuro sites that clorine can be an issue for some. Some moms immediately pop their kids in a epsom salt bath afterwards to help with the detox of the chemicals.

PLUS.. never swim alone. You might not be having seizures that concern you, but they have been known to change with time and situation ...occasionally.
