Ok, this will seem random, for a first post (I've been a lurker - sorry). Note: I left a message with my neurologist' nurse, and also will ask my pharmacist.

Has anyone here use/tried food grade diatomaceous earth? As a supplement for yourself (not speaking of using it for fleas etc).

I keep researching, and trying to see if it will cleanse out my meds, or have a negative neurological affect. But I have yet to see anything where it says not to use with epilepsy. Or that it reacts with medicines. But, just like any cleanse, it would have to rid everything, no?

Again - note - I will be speaking with my health team. But just curious to see if anyone has already done research, and if I just can't find the negatives. Also, I am talking about FOOD GRADE. The stuff we already consume in grains etc.

Lol, it actually is an all natural mineral supplement, with lots of different uses. We actually already consume it, in grains, because farmers use it to keep bugs away. They also feed it to livestock to keep parasites away, and ppl use it, as I mentioned, as a supplement. It's supposed to cleanse, regulate you, & all how bunch of other benefits. It actually seems crazy the uses. Makes it seem almost like a scam. Which is why I am doing crazy research on it. Gonna talk with the neurologist, pharmacist, and naturopath.

It's not a chemical/poison (that I have seen in my research). It's a naturally occurring mineral that is a powder like substance. Think like how people take clay. But, aside from health benefits (the lists I have seen are actually fairly extensive), people use it as an alternative to pesticides. From what I have seen in the research, it kills only exoskeleton insects. It dries them out.

But, my thought, anything that detoxes/cleanses the body will also cleanse your body of your medicines. I just haven't found research supporting that theory one way or another.

So, was simply curious, if others with epilepsy have used it.

Do not forget just because it is not mentioned as having any adverse effects when combined with epilepsy medication or any other medication this does not mean it will not affect you. Also remember it is used for anything from cat littler thermal insulator, even toothpaste.

Oh dear hmm not sure want put in my body that make cat litter kills bugs and used as thermal insulator I can see downside with that..toothpaste will kill you if you swallow it to often if you got ulcer. But be interested see how it will help keeps us posted. If it good body cleanse you want magnesium sulphate. (Epsom salts)will do it but got psyk self up first and stay in all day...
Myself would just stick to fresh veg keep meat out of diet and even that can be depressing when got super sweet tooth like me...they say fasting couple times a month but that lowers my sugar levels and I back to square one.....
Maybe science will invent big fat dairy cream cake gin and tonic and 20 cigs a day that would be good for you alas ain't not going happen in my lifetime...seems to me all the things that look horrible taste like cardboard make you crap are good for you. !!!!

Interesting. Until this point, the only use for DE that I was aware of was as filter media in certain types of pool filters. I don't think I would want to eat or otherwise consume this.

That's different. There is that one, and a food grade DE.

DE is basically sand. It is the fossilized bodies of diatoms which are ancient shore dwelling creatures. When something is fossilized though, the actual dead thing is replaced by minerals. So the rocks that make up most shorelines are fossilized diatoms and when they get crushed by the crashing of the waves, they become sand.

So this is "food grade" sand. It's still sand. Silica.

If you are heathy and have a strong digestive system, you would probably have no ill effects from eating some DE.

But my question is WHY?

You can get the minerals involved in other ways. Ingesting something that is alleged to "cleanse" you by scraping all the "toxins" out sets of my BSometer.
The inside of your digestive system is delicate. It does not need to be scraped out. Your body already has systems for expelling toxins. Eat a healthy diet and drink enough water and take some supplements if you feel the need and then let your body do its thing.

Eating sand is not going to help anything.

p.s. Do you know why it kills bugs? Because it tears up their digestive systems ripping them apart from the inside out. Almost makes you feel sorry for the poor bugs. Almost.
