Hi folks, new to the forum here . I have looked every where to find out what
a side effect of Dilantin is . " Coarseness of facial features " ? Seriously......
I have been all over the web and have found nothing ! What does it mean ? . I've been in and out of these forums several times over the years......and I reckon it's time to join , I've got plenty to share . If anybody can help define what this means I would sure appreciate it . Hope everyone is having a "seize free " day...................dw

Hey Gooseamoose, welcome to CWE!

The coarseness of facial features means a gradual thickening of the face, including the lips. It can also cause acne, and gum overgrowth. Good times!

Best,
Nakamova

Hi Gooseamoose:hello: (love the name:))

Glad you found CWE, it's a great place!

I was on Dilantin at first and also read and worried about "coarseness of facial features". I asked my doctor about it and he said pretty much what Nakamova said. He said it usually only occurs with high doses and after a long time on the drug, but he never said what he considered a high dose or a long time. But he did say it was pretty rare.

Great ...Thank you so much for your time, you to Nakamova . The Dilantin is working, I would hate to bale at this point . Thanks again for your time folks .

Welcome to our home. Glad you decided to join us here.

The 'coarseness' side effect is listed in many places, both online and elsewhere. I think it is rather rare based on what I can find.

I have been on various levels of Dilantin for almost 30 years with no problems like that.
