I am the mom of a 17 year old daughter. She has epilepsy that has been fairly controlled until 2008. She suffered her first status seizure on Feb. 1st. and has had many seizures since. We are currently checking ammonia levels, anyone had any dealings with that? Are we barking up yet another misleading tree?

:hello: Erica's Mom!

I'm sorry your daughter's undergoing
the awful "E" - but to me it sounds like
she may be going through stress,
hormone changes, and a whole lot more
that may be triggering these episodes.
Have you consulted with her Neurologist
or Epileptologist? Has she had her EEG
or vEEG done lately? I hate to be a
bearer of bad news ... but seizures DO
and CAN change - for better OR FOR
WORSE ... and times (years) can
change everything. AND IN ADDITION
I must also add - it is NOT unusual for
an individual to go through "relapse"
or "remission" period and all of a
sudden an explosion(s) of seizures to
suddenly manifest itself again after
so many months or years.

I would strongly recommend that you
keep a log/dairy/journal on YOUR END
and for her to keep one on HER END as
well. It may be a high time for her to
have a video electroencephalogram; if
she had not had any EEG's for a long
stretch or period of time.

And finally - WELCOME to CWE! Feel
free to browse around and make your-
self a home, and we also encourage that
your daughter to register too - we have
teens onboard in CWE!

:D

Hi Erica's mom, welcome to the forum. :hello:

There are many possibilities for seizure triggers. It doesn't hurt to check for problems under any stone IMO.

There is a ton of information posted here in the forum. A good place to start is from the best forum threads index.

I know ammonia is a waste product from the body. It is also a base. Maybe a more acidic diet would help her. I'm just throwing out a creative suggestion here. Anybody have suggestions?
I know somebody else posted something about various tests of different elements in the body like sugar. There's also another test that can be done at home. I'll have to search this web site. I think the device was a combination of a sugar/glucose monitor and one that measured ketones.

Hi Erica's mom, I am Rebecca's mom...
my daughter is 16 and I also was reading about ammonia. It can be related.
There are many and they need to all be looked at.
Rebecca is med free at the moment and has not had a seizure in 3 weeks. This is her TOM so it is likely that she will experience one this week. So far so good.
We just also started neurofeedback last week, so I am excited by those results.

Rebecca takes a handful of supplements, and a bio-identical progesterone.
She has a very strict nutritional plan that she attempts to adhere to. However she is 16 and cheats from time to time. Plus I need to eliminate some of the products that are not truly on the plan...

I hope you pull up a chair and read all of the archived threads over time. We love a discussion around here so I hope you do too.

Our doc warned me that girls with E have a much harder time during Puberty. I guess now I know what he's talking about.

You at least received correct information. I was told by our first neurologist that hormones do not play a roll in these events. Instinct told me different.

Hi Erica's mum...I don't know what medicine Erica was on, but I had my first seizure at 16 and barely a year later had status due to a bad reaction to medication.

I never had catamenial seizures...I was just sad to have seizures as a teen because I couldn't drive for awhile.

Welcome

Welcome to CWE. I hope you find lots of help here. I am sure you will find plenty of support and a little bit of laughter when you need a place to relax.

Your daughter's story is similar to some of our other members and she may want to check out the site herself as we have several members about her age. However, remember that her case is probably unique in some ways. I have learned that very few cases of E are the same.

Please pull up a chair. I started some coffee.
