My mother is the one with, suspected, epilepsy, and I've witnessed 2 absence seizures, one grand mal and a lot of complex partials I suspect.

The absence seizures are quite frightening as she is unable to respond to anything and it was quite a shock for me to see her staring so blankly ahead, and her absences last for at least a few minutes and she takes some time to become fully conscious again.

The grand mal was horrific though. She was blue and grey, she looked like a corpse and I thought that she was dying. Blood was dripping from her mouth, she shook violently and was making the most horrific noise.
I've been unable to get those images out of my head since it happened last week.

In a way though the complex partials are most distressing of all as she's aware of what's happening and becomes very distressed as she feels so ill. My mother is normally very stoical and to see her in tears because she feels awful, as though she is going to die at times she says, breaks my heart.
I think they may be worst for me to witness as frightening as grand mals are at least she is unaware of them.

This is terrible. I have had tonic/clonics off and on since I was 11, but I have never seen one except for maybe the very end of one of a homeless person outside of a liquor store. In college, when I was about 26, there was a young man in one of my anthropology classes who kept raising his hand and asking the teacher to repeat himself, and then staring off into space again, and I would get so irritated. Why wouldn't he just pay attention? About 7 weeks into the class it finally dawned on me what I was seeing. I felt like such a complete idiot. Maybe it was the Trileptal I was taking at the time that made me so stupid. Do they have a dumb--- icon on this site? Now for the past couple of years I have had partials AND absence AND the rare T/C escapee too :)
