My name is Becky and my son Elijah had his first seizure when he was 4 months old. Since then things got worse, then better, and now were headed downhill again :( He is on really high doses of two meds (Keppra and Topamax) and he's still having seizures. It's hard to watch my little guy go through this!

Doctor has now suggested Depakote and I am scared as hell about the med change, any opinions on this med?

Welcome to CWE BeckyLee

I was on Depakote when I was younger & had no problems with it as far as side-effects went. The problem is that it did very little to help control my seizures.

As scary as it is to try new anti-epileptic drugs everyone reacts differently to them. There are sites that have lists of possible reactions (long & short term) so that you know what to watch for but just because they're listed doesn't mean you (or your child) will get them.

Hi, Becky,

Welcome to the forum!

I have no experience with Depakote but lots of people in here do. They'll chime in. Also lots of parents of children with seizures.

How old is Elijah now?

What things did they try when he first had the seizures? (e.g. b-vitamins, supervised in hospital which stopped my then-1-month-old cousin's seizures for good)
