I was first diagnosed with, what I believe to be, absence seizures when I was 9. Lived pretty normal, but then had a bad wreck at the age of 17 and the next day had a Gran Mal at school. Needless to say, it didn't go over very well and I wound up dropping out and getting my GED. Fast forward 20 years and I enrolled myself in college and, despite not having a lot of issues without taking meds, I decided it was probably a good idea to get back on them (most likely due to an unconscious fear of a repetition of the high school years.) So the Doc prescribed dilantin and here I am.

The problem is that reading, which is largely required, is beginning to get affected and a certain level of confusion sets in when I try to concentrate real hard (like for a difficult test or reading for comprehension). Anybody else have this problem? Seems like it has become more of a hindrance to be on my medication than when I went without them.

Any thoughts, advice, or otherwise would be very welcome.

Hi,
Welcome to CWE.

I too take Dilantin along with cloazepam and I know that the meds. does do a numer me as well. Having said that, I have tried just to reduce my meds. ever so little and each time my seizures can back and seem to be worse.

I have had E. since I was a child, I'm 60 now.

Have you spoke to your Dr. about this?

----I do want to tell you that this forum has helped me so much.
Look into all the diff. forums and read as much as you like, I'm hoping you will find information that well help you in making this decision.

Ask any and as many questions that you would like to.

Hello Dajeff74,
First off I'm proud of you for going back to school, that is awesome!
I've been in school for awhile. It helps me to get up in the morning, take my meds, and then get my best studying done, before my meds kick in. (7am to 9am is my best work)
I too go through the lowered memory phases. I'm not on Dilantin though.
You may want to check with Student Services and ask for extended completion time on projects given your meds. It just required my doctor signing off in my case.
Were glad your here, it is a very loving community.
