Hello Everyone----
I have had epilepsy since I was 12 (yes, right at puberty). My epilepsy has been basically controlled with a whopping dose of Tegretol XR on a daily basis. My friend seizure has shown up every 18-24 months. I also gave birth (although prematurely) to beautiful twins----they are beautiful, healthy, and far too smart for their own good. And yes, I took Tegretol the entire time----I also pumped so that my children could get the benefit of breast milk.

Recently, I began to deal with a daily bout of nausea. It was difficult. I had every test known to man---including an endoscopy. Come to find out, I had gastritis and the h.pylori bacteria.

So, I was put on the triple antibiotic for the bacteria and have not been the same since. Needless to say, my levels became toxic which led to a very unususal T-C seizure. So unusual that my husband called the ER (never a good move over here). Since then, life has been interesting.

I went to an epilepsy center for a VEEG (5 days with no seizure) to which I was put on Keppra :o( that we found didn't work for me (after a month) and I had another T-C that was unusual---back to the ER.

Now, we're back on Tegretol with all of these twitches with a side helping of Lamictal (that's supposed to go up more). Overall, I've gone from being controlled and confident to anxious and scared.

Thank you all so much for your information as it's allowed me to weigh my options in terms of nutrition and health. I'm looking forward to meeting y'all.

Hi and Welcome! :)

Boy, it sounds like you've been on a medication roller-coaster lately!
I hope things settle down soon. :e:

Glad to see that you've been reading up on alternate therapies and the importance of self-help (diet, sleep, etc.).

So do I understand that the antibiotic caused your levels to go toxic and then your seizures came back even after your antibiotic dosing was complete?

I know you must be scared and probably totally confused and baffled as to why the body didn't re-regulate itself once your infection cleared. :agree:

All I can do is offer support, but I wish I could help! I have a two year old son, and taking care of him (while taking care of myself) has always been a challenge (but ohhh so worth it) :agree:

Take care of yourself. Keep us updated. I hope there are no more trips to the ER...(that, in itself, drains a days worth of energy out of you). All the best.

Hi LMT! Welcome to CWE. :) Feel free to ask questions, vent in the padded room, or just chimein . :)

Yep, you got it.....the antibiotics caused me to go toxic and I haven't been the same since. Any suggestions?!?!?!

Is the Tegretol the same as before? Was it switched from name brand to generic or from one pharmaceutical company to another? I have found out that these can be reasons also for the meds to not work as before.

Tegretol is the same as before.......one exception: I used to be on 300 mg in the morning. Now I'm on 400XR, but still Tegretol (not generic).

Hi LMT, welcome to the forum. :hello:

How long after you stopped breastfeeding did the nausea (and anti-biotic regimen) begin? I ask because the hormones change when you stop breastfeeding and this could also be a factor in your seizure threshold.

The bacteria was 7 years after, but you bring up a great point as I believe I'm in perimenopause (I"m 39).

Hi LMT - welcome

If the liver is not able to handle the toxins it can cause seizures as well.

Have you considered taking some pro-biotics to put back the good bacteria that was eliminated by the anti-biotic?
