Greetings. My wife and I are here because our son Nicholas has had focal seizures for over a year now. He is 5 years old. His seizures are not controlled by the lamictal yet so we are pushing on trying to find the dose or med that may provide cessation. It's been and continues to be very hard for us to see him go through this. He is so precious and I just wish I could take it for him. We don't know a lot but read all we can and try to better understand his epilepsy. We're on here to get support form other parents and also those with epilepsy. And hopefully we can help others too.
Thank you to this forum and everyone on here. We hope to get to know some of you on here.
Regards
Stephen, Yer, and Nicholas.

Hi, and welcome to CWE! Lots of great people here to offer support, and many I'm sure can use your support and advice as well :)

I sincerely hope you find the right treatment for Nicholas. If they have an excellent idea where his seizures originate, they can remove the damaged brain tissue. This requires them to recreate several seizures and monitor them with an eeg so they have a really good idea if he is a candidate. Ironically, little kids are better candidates for surgery like this. A childhood of seizures is very frustrating socially.
If you opt for medication, I highly recommend that he gets brand name only meds. They SAY generics are equivalent, but I have had them and they do not work. It's been well over 10 years for me on brand only without seizures. It is expensive, but it's your son.
I was raised with play equipment in my backyard, a bike to ride everywhere and a dog. Physical activity is a great stress buster and stress can trigger seizures for some of us. Keep lines of communication open between your son, his doctor and his school.

Welcome! If he has been on Lamictal for a year and hasn't had much relief, has your doctor explored trying a new medication? If not, you may want to also look into getting a second opinion. I have found through my journey that second opinions have been extremely helpful in improving my seizure control--another set of doctor eyes can sometimes yield new recommendations that better solve the problem. It doesn't sound like lamictal, at the current dose, has done the job yet, and either needs to be increased or changed, especially if that is the only medication you have tried so far. There are many, many options out there, and if one does not work, another may well. Don't give up the hope--many have found control with one med when another did not help.

Welcome to CWE!

Excellent points made above, I agree that you should have a discussion with your son's doctor -- or with another doctor -- about medication/treatment options that might be more effective. In addition, there are dietary approaches that might be worth asking about as well.
