Hi I am Rashmi from India ,suffering from epilepsy for 14 years. I have pursued my graduation degree in English, Journalism and Psychology.
Recently pursued my post-graduation degree in Psychology. I am a keyboard player and I am learning classical music from my mother.

I was affected by epilepsy at the age of 10. I had to depend on my family entirely. At the age of 16 I had to undergo an invasive diagnostic surgery which was unsuccessful. In my treatment process all my ct scans, pet scans, spect scans, MRIs all were normal. I also had to undergo a Vagus Nerve Stimulation surgery but the stimulator wasn't helpful in my case. Due to the VNS I used have side effects like hoarse voice and heavy breathing.
In April 2016 , I had a bad fall from the staircase due to an epileptic seizure. I had to undergo a brain surgery- craniotomy because of that I was admitted in the hospital and was in the ICU for a week and sometimes have memory problems , despite this I wrote my 4th semester exams and passed. Now I am completely dependent on my family and friends since my seizures lead to falls and are not under control.

I am currently 5 types of anti-epileptic drugs. While they ensure that I don't get full seizures and my seizures are partial, they also do make me drowsy.

Look forwarding to interacting with you all on this forum

Hi rash

Welcome to CWE, congratulations on passing your exams.

I'm pretty sure we have another member from India who is a dr & was training to be a neurologist.

Hi Rashmi, welcome to CWE!

Congrats on your successful studies! And good luck moving forward. Five medications is a lot to take, but it sounds like they are working well for you.

Hi Rashmi,

Welcome to CWE! I studied psychology. My Bachelor's degree is in psychology and my Master's degree is in Rehabilitation Counseling.

I would have joined the NGO, if only I wouldn't have got this stupid problem. I am tired of it

Rashmi,

I know. It can be frustrating. I had big career plans and my epilepsy got in the way. But, I have had to reach acceptance which took a very long time. Being angry and frustrated or depressed doesn't do any good. It doesn't change things. Sometimes, we have to change our plans in life. I used to have an extraordinary memory. I was able to remember things most people don't. It was always one of my great strengths, but not anymore. I used to have a high IQ (well above average), but not anymore. Brain damage from seizures changed my brain. Surgery then changed it even more.

Hi Rashmirao,

Welcome to CWE! I 've had seizure for 45 yrs. now and I started having them at the age of 10. Just like you I had testing done and all my Dr. could find was a scar on the right temporal lobe but when they did a right temporal lobectomy on me to remove the scar tissue they found damage on both sides of my brain that was in so deep not a single test showed it.
I think it's great that you got your Master Degree. If they had Forensic Science going on back when I was in school I would have probably tried to get a job in that field.
To find the correct seizure med have your Dr. do a DNA test on you that will show the amount of enzymes in your liver along with your body chemistry and they can match that up to the best seizure med for you with the least side effect. The test can also show if a person is drug resistant. One thing that has helped me a lot is medical marijuana CBD oil
I can buy it on line and they deliver it to me buy mail with no problems since I started that last spring my seizures have reduced greatly and I don't feel tired or have a headache after the seizure like I used to.
Be sure and keep a diary of all your seizures and keep track if there's a low pressure in the weather because that can sometimes trigger seizures for some people. I also found cutting back on carbs and starch foods was a great help reducing the seizures. I wish you only the best of luck and May God Bless You!
