I look forward to meeting other people in my age group who deal with what is considered an "inside" illness. With medication, lifestyle, etc., epilepsy seems like something that is severe when an episode / seizure happens, yet when we are managing our illness it's something that is easy to ignore.

I am relieved medication alleviates the episodes of the illness, but the side effects of the medication can sometimes cause people to wonder what is going on that makes me tired, twitchy, etc. I wish I reached out to a community 15 years ago - there seems to be a ton of great information here, and I look forward to participating and exchanging information, experiences and compassion.

xoxo,
Susan

Hi Susan In California

Welcome to you. I also am a new Member. Have been taking Anti Seizure Meds since I was 17....40 years on Meds. When you said when things are just going along with no incidences it is very easy to ignore it. That is why I take the Meds, Right? I have worked all my life, skied, hiked in the Alps, and the mother of two grown boys. I am indeed blessed with not having to live in fear.
You will find a lot of great information to help you with your new quest.

Blythe - it always seems like as soon as we think "eh, it's in the background," that we're reminded we have it, right? I think of it as something that's there, needs to be acknowledged and managed. However, I have a really hard time discussing it with other people - they automatically think "holy sh#t - you have a brain problem!" Then when you want to have a cocktail, ski, run a 10K, etc., that you might create a medical emergency for them. People just need to learn more about what our illness is.

We each have a quest

My quest is to educate myself on long term affects of anti seizure meds. My bones are not the bones of a normal 57 year old. I am guilty of not reading my Science News periodical. When my husband passed away 10 years ago, I stopped making the time. I would have caught the studies. I am miffed at my doctors for not making a bigger deal about my Osteopina (sp?). At the end of the month I visiting my mother in CA. Hope to be walking with a cane my then! I will keep working from home for the next six weeks. I am petfified of falling.
