I've been epileptic for some ten years now. Frontal temporal lobe problems. I've been on many different meds to control seizures. I had to come off one med valporate as it was harming my organs. Two months after coming off it starting having up to ten seizures a week. I was then prescribed keppra and oxcarbezipine in addition to lamictal. Fitted for for more works then was put on clabaxioin . Started on oxcarbezipine and seizures have ceased. However after eight weeks of taking oxcarbezipine I have a rash on both arms . Is this drug causing it?

Hi Gig1968,

Welcome to CWE! Just like you I have both temporal and frontal lobe epilepsy and I've been on over 10 different meds to control my seizures but then I had a DNA test done to find out I was drug resistant. I did take valproic acid and it worked really good but then it got into my blood platelets and I had to stop the drug it also caused me to lose 70 lbs. in 4 months even though I would eat every day.

Oxcarbezipine it a lot like the drugs tegretol and lamicatal and you can get a rash from the drug. If you notice your skin itching and see tiny little red bumps that look like pimples that is the rash. You will need to see a skin specialist and get some cream to clear the rash up. Also only use dove soap for sensitive skin and don't use any perfumed shampoos or anything with a scent in it because it can cause the rash to get worse and spread. Also when you shower or bathe make sure the water isn't that hot because that will spread the rash and wear loose clothing. I had to do this for about 3 wks. after becoming allergic to tegretol and lamictal. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Thankyou for your reply . I've been on lamictal, validate, keppra, frisium and now oxcarbezipine.
I'm on 300mg of lamictal, 900 oxcarbezipine along with keppra. The oxcarbezipine I had taken for some ten weeks before the rash appeared. Small pimple like things on hands but more red covering on both arms and now spreading to ankles and shin. Bloody painful . I've been given steroid cream but doesn't really help much. I don't want to come off oxcarbezipine. As it stopped me from fitting some 20 times a week. Other side effect I dink twice as much fluids had still have dry throat.

Hi Gig1968, welcome to CWE!
Did you see a dermatologist to get a specific diagnosis? There are a lot of different kinds of rashes, everything from a contact reaction to a med allergy to shingles. If the rash is getting worse, you should let your neuro know as well.

I went to hospital yesterday as an emergency to see my neurologist. He agreed it is the oxcarbezipine. I'm being slowly weaned off it 50mg a week. I'm now starting lacosamide slowly steadily rising to 200mga day. Be interesting to see how rash reacts to this. Any side effects that people have had by taking this new drug when taking other epilepsy medications?

Hello & welcome. I have simple & complex partials--I've been on almost every AED available.
I'm currently on Topamax, Vimpat, & Zonisamide. Actually trying to get off Vimpat despite it being a good medicine thanks to new insurance.

I'm now beginning to wonder whether the rash is caused by lamatrogine and not the oxcarbezipine. I've read on the internet about the lamictal rash. Mine has now spread across both firearms and is now on both ankles and neck. I'm using loads of cream it helps a little. I know if I stop the lamictal I will fit like hell I'm stuck.

How long have you been on the Lamictal? Most rashes on Lamictal are harmless, but because there's the possibility of the much more serious rash associated with the deadly Stevens-Johnson syndrome, you shouldn't hesitate to get in touch with your neuro, especially if you are experiencing other symptoms such as fever, muscle or joint pain, or swelling of the lymph nodes.

I am SEVERELY allergic to Tegretol, & I'm allergic to Lamictil, too. When my neurologist tried to add Lamictil as a third medication because I still get breakthroughs, I started to get a rash across my upper back, exactly like I did with Tegretol, but not as severe. I stopped taking it less than 2 weeks after starting.

I've been on lamictal for twelve months or more. Ten weeks ago also started taking oxcarbezipine. Rash started roughly 4 weeks ago and is spreading each day. Neuro!ogist has seen rash and thinks it's a reaction to drug but which one not sure. Whichever drug it is it's a nightmare.
Forearms completely covered. Ankles going same way. The oxcarbezipine when added to the lamictal has prevented my seizures completely. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Great choice daily fits if I come off drugs or looking like a freak with the rash lol

Usually the Lamictal rash shows up somewhere in the first two months. Doesn't rule Lamictal out as the cause in your case, but makes the oxcarbezipine seem the more likely culprit. When will you be off the oxcarbezipine completely? If you've already stopped it, when was the last day?

Oxcarbezipine been slowly reduced from 900mg to nil over 4 weeks. Lacosimide started last week after first reduction of oxcarbezipine. I don't think neurologist is convinced it was the oxcarbezipine as it wasn't all over my body and it didn't show up till two months after I first took the oxcarbezipine. Not much more I can do it will be a month till oxcarbezipine is out of system and then it may not be that drug. I've googled lots of skin rashes and mine is as bad as some of those pics.

Doesn't sound like fun. :(
Hopefully you'll see some improvement in the rash soon.
