12 years ago at age 38 i started having night time seizures out of the blue they were full blown grand mal but only at night. My doctor put me on topamax 100mg before bed i have been seizure free up until a week ago i started having these deja vu like feelings and confusion and i would forget what i had done for 10 to 20 minutes. People who have been with me during these periods say at the start for approx 1 to 2 minutes i just have this blank uncomprehending stare but after that i am able to function with confusion for the remaining time. Afterwards i remember nothing of what happened during that 10 to 20 minute period. I went to the ER on the third incidence. I've had 5 now and the only thing abnormal was low potassium and my blood pressure which is normally 110/64 was 183/107 they attributed that to the seizure i have yet to get into see my neurologist cant get in until next week just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar symptoms.

Hi teresal, welcome to CWE!

Your symptoms sound like Simple and Complex Partial seizures. Simple partials can involve deja vu as well as other kinds of sensory disturbances. When they progress to other kinds of seizures they are called auras. Complex partials involve partial or impaired awareness -- there can be confusion, but the person stays conscious.

Definitely ask your neurologist about these symptoms. You might also want to look into a hormonal component -- fluctuations in thyroid and/or estrogen can be seizure triggers.
There is a connection between low potassium intake and higher blood pressure -- have you had any dietary problems or nutritional issues recently? You might look into upping your intake of potassium-rich foods.

Best,
Nakamova

Thank-you very much for your reply.... I see the neurologist this Thurs. I am nervous but, at the same time I want to now why....Thank-you again though, you gave me a lot to think about until then....

new here also

18 years ago I started having both grand mal and petite mal seizures after a vechicle accident w/ the military. Now I am out of the military working part time and have a great husband and daughter. If it wasn't for that accident though I wouldn't have met my husband. I took a LOA and went to BC canada, met my man.
But I am still having these seizures (call the small ones brain farts) and they change their way about every 5 years. Which I find frigging annoying. I don't have any auras. I just go on day to day.

Hi Teresa,

Sorry to hear about seizures starting at that time in your life. I agree with Nakamova as they do sound like SP/CP seizures. I also have had T/C's and C/P's and when I experience the C/P's, I get that blank stare and cannot comprehend what is being said not can I speak for about 10-15 minutes after wards. I also take Topomax, 200 mgs., along with Keppra.

Your neuro may need to increase you meds, since it sounds like the seizures are increasing.

My neurologist raised my topamax from 100mgs to 200mgs. I hope all goes well with that. And my memory and and as they say dopeamax doesn't seem to get worse. And It stops my seizures!!

Sorry to hear about what you had to go through. Happy to hear you are having success with topamax though!
