Know what's a really good way to flip from waking up in a great mood to being extremely stressed out? I got a letter via UPS from my ISP that they need to provide my information to a film production company for downloading a movie illegally... I don't know how to use torrents. lol. Fortunately I can definitely provide proof that I was at work on the date and time in question for when something was downloaded from my IP address. Still stressed out though. Stress induced headache. I massively freaked out when I opened that letter. But once I looked at the date/time, I looked on the calendar and noticed that I can prove that I was in-fact, at work, and therefore wouldn't have been able to download anything from my IP address. Breeeeeeaaaaaathe.

Sounds like a prank in bad taste. Some people seriously need to find something better to do with their time. Take care. Keep smiling.

Also I googled the name of the film company and the law firm handling their case, so it's the real deal. Now I'm also worried that someone has been hacking into my IP (or whatever?) even though it's supposedly a secure network (password protected, etc.)

What a pain, but good that you have proof of innocence. I'm surprised that the film production company would go after individuals like that -- there's so much more revenue lost from film/video piracy than from illegal downloads.

From what I've understood, they go after a large amount of people at once. On the record they sent with the subpoena it has a whole list of IP addies with mine highlighted (along with the date and time which is how I know I can prove innocence). It's an indie film company (I googled them, and they actually made a movie I watched recently at a friend's house), so in a way I'm not too surprised that they're suing people; their films are lower budget and they're not backed by bigger film companies, so in all honesty I don't blame them. I'm just irritated that I got caught up in it :\

FYI - IP addresses are not really the most reliable way to ensure that it was your PC. Only if they tie the mac address to the IP would it be really your PC. But it is good that a time was provided to you.
It may actually be a scam by that film company to make money off of people. Think of how many people would be willing to pay a fee to the company and just make that go away.

Seriously, good luck with it all. Sorry I was so flippant about it my friend. I hope it doesn't take too long to clear up for you. These sorts of things can be a real thorn in the side. Take care.
