hello,

I am confused.. please help me

My boyfriend has epilepsy since he was 3 yr old :((

Though so far he has had seizure only thrice in his life..
1) when he was 3 yr old
2) when he was 11 yr old
3) when he was 28 yr old

he takes medicine everyday twice.. one in morning and one in evening

i am trying to find the cause of his epilepsy ??? is it hereditary ?

his sister has panic attacks and mother has migraine... are these related ?

should i plan a baby ? will he/she also have some neurotic problem ??

please suggest

hey

hi. i was diagnosed with TLE a month ago, i also have panic disorder and am led to believe that there can be a cross over of the two in that panic symptoms are sometimes seizure activity so maybe your bfs sister has TLE. i know this doesnt help but its just a thought.
on the having a baby, a friend of mine has recently decided to not have children. she is epileptic and her husband diabetic and she takes a lot of medication, she is worried about hereditary issues too, i dont know about a heriditary link with epilepsy, i am the only person in my extended family with it, however mental illness does run in my family.
i would talk to your doc and see. also why not plan a child, you cant worry about what might happen cause it may never come about

Hi kanika --

While epilepsy can have a hereditary component, for the majority of people there is no genetic cause. In fact over 50% of seizure disorders have no known primary cause. I understand your worry about the possibility of a genetic predisposition in your boyfriend's family, but I don't think it should stop you from starting a family. After all, your boyfriend is living a happy life with you, right?
