First, let me apologize if this is in the wrong area. I looked around and this one seemed to be the best fit.

I'm scared and need some perspective from you guys. I know the general answer is go see a doctor, so there is no need to repeat it unless you really want to :)

Last night, I was on my computer when i started to feel weird. It was late so I shook it off as just being tired. Soon after I began to feel nauseous and had a weird tingling in my stomach like when you go down a drop on a rollercoaster.

I stood up and realized something was very wrong. My whole body was numb or tingling. I began to get double vision and also "choppy" vision (like trying to play a video that can't load fast enough and you just get one frame, miss a few, another frame, etc.). It also felt like I was in a fog.. Sort of like I was disconnected fom reality.

I was also shaky. Very very shaky. It felt like I was read to tense up and lose control at any second. I got these "electric shocks", especially if I looked at the tv that was on or looked around too fast. If anyone has ever had too much to drink, became nauseous and try to fight it, knowing that it you will throw up at some point whether you want to or not -- it was like that but instead of getting sick it felt like I was on the verge of convulsing. This feeling lasted at least 10 minutes before I don't remember anything.

I am prescribed klonopin and lamictal for reasons other than epilepsy, as well as wellbutrin. When I got the feeling that I might start convulsing, I ran to my medicine cabinet, grabbed some klonopin and chewed them, then sucked on another trying to get it into my system as fast as I could, since it is a benzo and can be used as an abortive. I also chugged a beer in hopes that it would rapidly lower activity in my cns while I was waiting for the benzos to get into my system. Then I don't remember anything. I may have convulsed or I may not have. I know before I lost my memory that it felt like if I were to lay down, I would instantly lose control and start thrashing. I also remember pacing around (it helped ease the shock sensations and random muscle tensioning, and gave me more "control"). Then the next thing I know I am waking up this morning. I don't know what caused the memory loss: klonopin (likely) or something else.

I also take about 100-150 mg of benadryl a night for sleep. It makes my stomach feel odd and lowers balance and coordination, but was nothing like this. This one instantly struck me with fear. I "just knew" this was bad.

So, was this a seizure of some sort? Would the fact that I take both lamictal and klonopin daily have been the only reason I was able to "fight" the sensation that I was about to start convulsing at any point?

Hi Xsn900, welcome to CWE!

You're right -- you should go see a doctor, and consider reviewing all the different prescription and non-prescription meds you are taking. Either together or individually they may be causing the symptoms you describe. Klonopin can prevent seizures, but Wellbutrin can cause them. Lamictal is generally neuro-protective, but can cause seizures if you miss a dose or take it inconsistently. Alcohol and benadryl can stimulate the brain and cause seizure-like symptoms, and can also have problematic interactions with the other meds you are taking.

It's tough to know whether the different meds may have prevented a seizure or seizure-like symptoms, or may have been causing them. (Computer usage may have played a role too). In most cases, folks who have convulsive seizures may feel odd or have some other sensory aura ahead of time, but they don't feel like they are about to start convulsing. If you did go on to convulse while unconscious, some telltale signs would be muscle soreness, mouth soreness, nausea and headache.

Best bet is to talk to to your doctor about what you experienced. Hopefully this is a one-time thing, and adjusting your meds and/or other factors in your overall health will prevent a re-occurrence.

Best,
Nakamova

Thank you, I had planned on calling them today. I doubt it was unprovoked, I just wish I could remember what happened. The wellbutrin was recently just bumped up so i think it may have pushed me over an edge I was probably already close to. The alcohol was also after the symptoms started.

The only thing I can definitively say is that it wasn't a typical side effect of any drug. I had been taking this combination for months. The only change was the increase in wellbutrin, and the experienced occurred right when the dose would have been entering my system. Seems kind of like a 1+1=2 situation to me given the circumstances.

Does it sound like a simple partial seizure? As I read more about it, it really seems to hit the nail on the head. I was just curious if others felt the same way at any point... Maybe because I subconsciously don't want to believe that's what happened. I suppose it's time for the doc ;)

I also didn't feel weak/sore, but I was fatigued and nauseous enough to skip dinner after I woke up and had been dead asleep for about 10 hours after my memory went. Then again, 8x my regular dose of klonopin (I take a low dose) could just as easily have caused all of these. So many variables!
