Hi all.
I was diagnosed yesterday with epilepsy and advised to start on Lamictal. I had a seizure in 2010 and another in 2012, each one after I dropped to the ground and hit my head. Just had another seizure in Oct. 2013 that did not come after a fall/head injury, so neurologist advised treatment.

Coincidentally, though, the MRI the doc ordered showed I have Chiari Malformation, where the bottom of my cerebellum dips down into the spinal column. One of the symptoms of that can be syncope.

Of course, I want to know whether the Chiari and seizures are related. Anyone with Chiari out there? From this forum I already found links to research on the correlation, and am grateful for that!

I can't help you with an answer, but wanted to welcome you to the site (sorry for the reason though!) There are lots of people in here with a lot of experience and knowledge, so hopefully someone will chime in that can help! Best of luck on your journey, keep us posted!

Hi beachgirl58, welcome to CWE!

It does seems likely that there's a connection between Chiari and seizures. But I don't think the scientists have figured it out yet. Check out this CWE thread for more info and some interesting links:

And make yourself t home here. Plenty of us have tried Lamictal, so feel free to ask any questions about that if you opt to start meds.

Best,
Nakamova

Hey beachgirl.

I can't help you with your answer, but welcome. I've been here a while and there are a lot of great people that may be able to help you. :)

Hello and welcome! I must confess that Chiari is something I have never heard of. Sounds kind of like an Italian wine, though, doesn't it? :) I have been on Lamictal for about 15 years now and it does a good job of controlling my tonic clonic seizures with very few side effects, so I hope it works for you. Keep us posted on how things are going, OK? Best of luck with the journey!

Hi Beachgirl! I do have a friend who is dating someone chari malformation! I know he has had I think 2 seizures, but one of the seizures was from the doctors overdosing the drugs after surgery! I'm not sure what caused the second one, but from what I know about chari malformation, it seems like the two could be related.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this, but welcome to the community! :)
