Has anybody else had topamax make them over the top emotional?
I'm off keppra now because it made me so angry and topamax is just making me cry all the time and I'm bringing up stupid stuff from 10-15 years ago with my husband that's just causing arguments!!!!!! What the is going on???? so over this crap.am I depressed????

From the Topomax web site:
Depression is a common complaint in people taking Topamax. In studies, up to 13 percent of people taking Topamax reported depression. This data comes from clinical trials that studied Topamax extensively in thousands of people and documented its side effects.
You should talk to your doctor to let them now what's going on. If the depression doesn't let up, and if you can't find a way to mitigate it, then it's possible that you may need to switch meds again. So sorry you have to deal with this. :(

yes, the topamax will make you very emotional and the combo will make you very emotional i am on both have been on both for some time now i wanted to make sure to see if it was working or not the doctor wanted to switch me right away like after a month on both and i wanted to see after a while because i wanted to see after an adjusted period of time it did get better after a while. it did take some time though. not so much depression with me more like a lost filter of self control of patience with people a short fuse if you will. I find I have to reign myself in more at work I find it very difficult because i work with very young very inexperienced people (i work in retail) and sometimes they act very childish and stupid any other retail business I have ever worked in this kind of behavior there would have been some sort of consequences for not here. So It will get better you may have to either give it some time or you may find a better medication may be better in your case. Good luck let us know : )

Hi all, my questions are for keppra users as im a newby. Ive just started and am feeling very fitty, almost like im on the cusp of a TC !! anyone else experience this when starting out ?? Getting meds sorted is driving me insane, lamotrigine controls the little ones and the auras which were driving me nuts but lets the TCs through. Its a hard day today and my family are wonderful but its hard for them to understand xxx I really feel for all those whose financial situation restricts their med choices and options, love and hugs to all that need it xxx

Hi hazel, that's very scary when you feel like that and unfortunately for me I felt like that a lot on keppra-I was anxious a lot though(worrying about when my next seizure would be) and stress is not good for epileptics.
When I was on tegretol it took away my auras but that just meant that when a seizure was coming I had no warning so I think you need to speak to your dr.
Can you call your neuro/dr??? What dosage are you on??? He may have you on a low dose to start with.

Haven't been on Topamax, but I wanted to agree with you about Keppra making you angry. That's exactly why I went off of that medication. I would yell at my husband for no good reason and over silly things.

I want to comment on keppra... I am on depakote and keppra. weaning off of depakote to be just on keppra.. I have noticed my mood swings are a bit crazy. I get frustrated easily and have no patience. The reason I wanted to get on keppra was because I would like to get pregnant in about a year or two but for now I would like to be on birth control until im fully ready. Depakote has great effects on me but the bad ones were too much eating and loss of hair and some nausea. Now on keppra i feel soooo tired and sleepy all the time! I dont know if I can do this! and if I get on birth control I dont know if my side effects will only get worse. :/

Kirsty,

Has anybody else had topamax make them over the top emotional?
I'm off keppra now because it made me so angry and topamax is just making me cry all the time and I'm bringing up stupid stuff from 10-15 years ago with my husband that's just causing arguments!!!!!! What the is going on???? so over this crap.am I depressed????

Topamax is famous for making people sad, blue, depressed. Fighting or anger can also be a sign of depression. I cried all the time on the stuff. Though, I didn't realize how bad the depression had gotten on Topamax until it got really, really bad. I was taken off immediately and put on trileptal, which was also a bust. Then onto lamictal which seems to be the best for me so far.

When I was on Keppra I kept to myself a lot so I wouldn't piss off everybody in my life because wow, did I have a temper. On Topamax I was depressed and I isolated myself, which is the opposite of what I should have been doing. You need to be around people who know you well and can monitor your well-being. This is where your husband is handy - sometimes he'll see where you are at medically when you aren't able to see it. Plus, it's a bit unwise for someone to block themselves off from society when they are super depressed.

Your primary care physician and your neurologist both need to know this is happening. Call them Monday and let them know. Also, ask your husband to let you know if the crying and arguing is getting worse. If you feel you are falling into a deep pit of depression (or friends or family tell you that you are) call your primary care doc IMMEDIATELY. It doesn't matter if it's 2am. Use their night service. Call right away.

It's useful when you're prescribed a new drug to go to two places to check it out, just to see what the serious side effects can be so you can watch out for them. One is the National Institute of Health's website which contains the official package inserts, the other is askapatient which has unedited patient experiences with any particular drug.

Big hugs. I've been in the place you are right now and it's not easy. So take a big breath, and just be extra kind to yourself for awhile.

What does an aura feel like? I've had epilepsy for 16 years and never heard of it.
An aura is another name for a simple partial seizure. It's considered a seizure in and of itself, but it's often called an aura if it's the early stage of a more generalized seizure to come. The symptoms can vary quite a bit, but they all occur with full consciousness. Here are some of the ways they can manifest:

Motor seizures:
These cause a change in muscle activity. For example, a person may have abnormal movements such as jerking of a finger or stiffening of part of the body. These movements may spread, either staying on one side of the body (opposite the affected area of the brain) or extending to both sides. Other examples are weakness, which can even affect speech, and coordinated actions such as laughter or automatic hand movements. The person may or may not be aware of these movements.

Sensory seizures:
These cause changes in any one of the senses. People with sensory seizures may smell or taste things that aren't there; hear clicking, ringing, or a person's voice when there is no actual sound; or feel a sensation of "pins and needles" or numbness. Seizures may even be painful for some patients. They may feel as if they are floating or spinning in space. They may have visual hallucinations, seeing things that aren't there (a spot of light, a scene with people). They also may experience illusions—distortions of true sensations. For instance, they may believe that a parked car is moving farther away, or that a person's voice is muffled when it's actually clear.

Autonomic seizures:
These cause changes in the part of the nervous system that automatically controls bodily functions. These common seizures may include strange or unpleasant sensations in the stomach, chest, or head; changes in the heart rate or breathing; sweating; or goose bumps.

Psychic seizures:
These seizures change how people think, feel, or experience things. They may have problems with memory, garbled speech, an inability to find the right word, or trouble understanding spoken or written language. They may suddenly feel emotions like fear, depression, or happiness with no outside reason. Some may feel as though they are outside their body or may have feelings of déja vu ("I've been through this before") or jamais vu ("This is new to me"— even though the setting is really familiar).

Hi everyone!!!! Just letting you all know I think I've made it through to the other side with the topamax.I spoke to my nuerologist and he said to me that the first 5-6 weeks would be the hardest and geez were they ever but I feel the best I have felt in years!!!! Fingers crossed it stays that way.

That's great! I hope things keep getting better and better for you.

I took topamax for almost three years and yes it made me severly depressed but I didn't realise how awful it was until I changed to lamictal which improved my quality of life immensely.
