Hi everyone.. I have epilepsy being seizure free for 5 years currently on keppra. My question is can a primary care doctor prescribe seizure medicine? I lost my insurance and can't afford to see a neurologist anymore.

Hi anacatano

I'm in Australia so have always been under the care of a neurologist, my neurologists have been the ones who have adjusted my meds eg added meds or changed doseages. If I ever needed a new script before I see the neuro I am able to go to the GP (primary dr) to get a repeat (new script filled).

I'm guessing in America the primary dr can give you a script but I have no idea whether they can adjust meds. I know someone else will be able to help :)

Hi anacatano --

There is no legal constraint preventing your primary care doctor from prescribing seizure medicine. But she or he may not be comfortable doing so, and/or may want to get a copy of your records from your neurologist before proceeding. I recommend you give your pcp a call to find out what would make the process work best for you both. Good luck! :)
