When growing up were you ever told or taught silly things to help you remember something , like spelling ect !

for example:

BECAUSE - Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants

ASSUME - when you ASSUME You make an ASS out of U and ME

would love to hear any of yours :) :roflmao:

Desert vs Dessert. Dessert has two S's because you want seconds.

(I bet LJ has a bunch of good ones.)

I had a wonderful 7th grade science teacher who had all kinds of helpful mnemonics for remembering things like bones and symbols for elements. I'll always remember the patella is the knee bone because your grandfather pats his knee and tells a story. The symbol for mercury is Hg; mercury is in thermometers made of hot glass. Potassium is K; the first of potassium is pot which is like a kettle... Okay, they're a bit silly, but it's been faaaar longer since I've been in 7th grade than I care to say and I still remember, so they worked. :)

My very earnest mother just served us nine pancakes for the order of the planets. Of course now she's not serving pancakes, lol.

Righty tighty, lefty Lucy when trying to unscrew something.

Never eat shredded wheat - north, east, south, west.

I'm sure I've got plenty more, just drawing a blank..

One of my high school teachers taught us a trick to remember how many days each month had. He did this one day when he got fed up with students not knowing.

It's very simple to do. First make two fists, like so.

It doesn't matter which fist you start with, it works either way.

Every month represented by a knuckle has 31 days, while the months in between have 30 or less. He gave us a break with February. :)

Oh I had tons... For remembering when to use commas we had FANBOYS (For, And, But, Of, Yet, So). That helped me quite a bit - obviously there are exceptions, but the basic rules are always important :)

I also learned the dessert/desert one :)

When I was learning to read music we had a couple (FACE for between the lines and Every Good Boy Does Fine for on the lines - for those of you who read music)... I still remember that almost twenty years later :)

And many many more, but I can't remember all of them of course :)

I had trouble remembering when the phases of mitosi occurs so taught myself
IPMAT:
Interphase - not interesting happens
Prophase - Chromatids pair up
Metaphase - Chromasomes line up in the Middle
Anaphase - Chromatids get pulled Apart at the centromere
Telophase - Two nuclear envelopes reform
and then cytokinesis - Your'e left with two genetically identicle nuclei

and now i never get confused :)

Expanding on bigmans post, I also learn " thirty days has September. April, June and November. All the rest have thirty-one except February with twentym-eight days clear and twenty-nine each leap year.

I did an administration cause 12 years ago, there was a little tip that 1 of our teachers told us when it came to filing documents. It was handy at the time but do you think I can remember it now? LMAO :paperbag:

I wish I did have alot of good ones to add!
We were always taught Never East Shredded Wheat when you went clockwise around the compass to remember what went where. Does that count?
I still do the fists when I need to remember which month has how many days like BIGMAN demonstrated.
Plus I still do simple math on my fingers but that's another story.

Simple math is tricky for me too LJ (thank god for calculators!), and I tend to mix up Right and Left (never, ever ask me for directions).

i tried but i kept forgetting...one i remember is 'old olympic top oh i forgot the rest but it was to rember all the cranial nerves
