Hello. My name is Carole and I have a 9 year old daughter who was diagnosed with epilepsy two years ago. She has been on Keppra but has had break through seizures so they are going to do another EEG and switch her medication. All her seizures (except one) have been during the night and I "think" we have witnessed them all. What happens if she seizes at night and we don't catch it. We have a baby monitor but exhaustion has taken over and I don't always hear her. She is a stomach sleeper and she sleeps with a pillow (which is fairly flat). I am worried she is going to smother. Her seizures only last about 30 -45 seconds and then she goes into a postictal state for about an hour. She doesn't remember anything in the morning which is great news! I really need some reassurance. Thank you in advance for your help. I just found this place and already am glad to be here!

Welcome Carole

There's a lot of parents here whose kids have epilepsy. Me, I'm one of the adults that have it.

I'm assuming your daughter has partial seizures? It doesn't sound like anything bad will happen if she has a seizure & you're not there. After all, what do you do when she has a seizure & you are there?

Meanwhile, check the site out. You might be interested in the nursery to read what other parents have to say & if their children are similar to your yours.

Hi Carole,

I'm fairly new too. I've been to a few other sites and forums along these lines around the interwebs, but this one's a gem. We're lucky to have found it, eh? Lots of priceless information and awesome support. I hope you find a lot of answers and encouragement here. Welcome.

Hi Carole, welcome to CWE!

You might want to check out "The Nursery" here, where other parents have posted. Not sure about what to recommend with your daughter's nighttime seizures -- as Eric says, it may depend on what kind they are. Has she had problems choking before? Have you checked in with the doctors about whether to monitor her all night long?

I hope the med change does the trick for your daughter. Other CWE members have tried using diet modifications and/or neurofeedback to help reduce or replace the meds for seizure control. Don't know if that's and option for your daughter, but worth considering if it is.

Best,
Nakamova
