Hi, all. I'm looking for information to help my six-year-old. She's having odd symptoms that just don't connect, and in "googling" her symptoms I came across this forum. I am wondering if she could be epileptic. She has been having episodes of "zoning out" at school since September. She describes it as "staring and I can't stop." Her teacher has punished her daily by making her pull a ticket for these episodes of not paying attention. The latest thing that is happening is she is reporting strange sensations in her head at night. She describes it as her head cracking open, or popping sounds like popcorn, coming from her head. I have laid awake with her several nights over the Christmas holiday and cannot hear anything. She is clearly frightened by this. I took her to the doctor Friday and he could not find any neurological abnormalities (I failed to mention the "staring" episodes to him -- didn't think there was a connection till I came across this forum). Her eye pressure was normal and her motor functions were fine. He thinks it may be pressure in her ears and prescribed a nasal spray to open her nasal passages, which were blocked, and help with the pressure in her ears somehow. My first thought was that it was her ears, but the sounds are coming from all over her head. I may be completely off base, but do any of these symptoms sound familiar, and if so, how do I talk to her doctor about this? How is epilepsy diagnosed, and how is it treated? I know that's a huge leap to make, and I hope I'm way off base. Any help is appreciated.

Well, my first thought would be to see a neurologist. Actually a pediatric neurologist. I was dx'd with epilepsy at 18 months old, and it was when I had a grand mal seizure, and was taken my ambulance to a big childrens hospital. It was there, they did the tests.. MRI, EEG, etc. My MRIs have always came back normal, but my EEG's came back with seizure activity. So if I were in your shoes, I would first be looking to find a pediatric neuro and set up a time to express your concerns to them. They will go from there, and probably do the normal tests... EEG, MRI, etc.

In the meantime, i would also be sitting down with your school teacher and expressing your concerns about this. Its not fair that they punish your daughter for something that she may have no control over. Let them know that you will be looking into this with doctors, but in the meantime, to please try to be patient and if anything were to occur during school, to have them contact you.

forgot to ask... if you dont mind... where are you located at?
There are alot of good sites to locate pediatric neuros.

My daughter has partial seizures but also will stare.those are absent seizures. Ask your doctor for a federal for an eeg. No one beleived me about my 4 yr old until she had the eeg and she happened to have an episode in front of the doctor. Seizures can do strange things.my daughter runs in circles.. stick to your gut feeling.and I would talk to the teacher.
