I woke up one day with what i thought was horrible horrible depersonalization/derealization. It matched up with alot of the symptoms and i went to get an eeg and it said i had left temporal lobe activity. The first neurologist said that it can be normal for my age and that it was "borderline abnormal". The next neurologist said its not epilepsy but that there were short sharp spikes of activity in my left temporal lobe. Im still having very bad depersonalization/derealization and its been a whole year. What is going on with me? The neuro said that putting me on meds would actually cause more harm than good so he didnt. I also remembered that i had just started taking remeron which is an ssri for depression around that time when i woke up that day....could this be a potential cause or factor??

hello Tom,

warm welcome to CWE :)

Have you checked the intetnet for remeron side affects? They do talk about what you are feeling...

that they are not in hurry to put you on a epilepsy medication, is not a bad thing, at least until they are sure...you may have a good doctor...but its time to talk to him/her agian..

I think that there is a high possibility your anti-depressant medication is a problem.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's) reduce depression by affecting chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) used to communicate between brain cells.
Different drugs of this nature have different sife effects, but most can cause Nervousness, agitation, restlessness, sleep disturbances, and even Hallucinations.

As far as starting on any epilepsy medication, Chaz1 is right.
Dont be in a hurry, unless the neurologist prescribes it, as once you start you will be on it for life.
They will leave you feeling sedated and unable to think clearly for the first few months.
Its very hard stopping epilepsy medication as it takes months and you can suffer withdrawal fits.

Hi Tom, welcome to CWE!

You might want to seek out a 3rd opinion regarding your EEG results -- it sounds like there's definitely room for interpretation there, and TLE can cause some psychic side effects. It is the case that some anti-depressants don't mix well with anti-convulsants, so best not to rush into adding a med if it isn't absolutely necessary. The Remeron might not be working properly though, and you might want to discuss trying a different med with your psychiatrist.

Best,
Nakamova
