Acidosis and the Modified Atkins Diet. The diet is great but every once in a while it seems to cause some major acidosis challenges. Has anyone experienced this and how have you dealt with it ?

Hi Lauren1402, welcome to CWE!

If you find yourself regularly suffering from lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, etc. you should try and add some "base" foods into your diet. You can get short-term relief by drinking some orange juice. (Even though orange juice is acidic, it actually helps the body become more base, and helps flush acids from the kidneys). Antacids can also provide relief, though you don't want to take them for a long stretch of time. Generally, if you are experiencing side effects from your diet, then you need to re-evaluate it, and perhaps add back in some fresh fruits and vegetables. Over time acidosis can cause problems for your body. It might be helpful for you to do the diet in collaboration with a registered nutritionist/dietician who can help monitor your pH and adjust your food choices accordingly.

Hi Nakamova,

Thank you so much for responding to my question on acidosis. Your advice is on the button. I am also using Potassium Citrate with great results.
I am seeing a specialist nutritionist in a months time as there are no dieticians in my home city who support the diet. I started my diet with a set of notes from a dietician who basically advises telephonically. Before my appointment with the nutritionist I will be doing a whole lot of tests to assist with fine tuning my diet which has not been done since starting out 4 months ago.

Thanks once again
