Hi I'm new here. My 17 year old son, Troy, has been having seizures for over 4 years. We've been trying to treat him without meds. He has some other health issues so he tried Lamictal for a little bit, but he got some bad side effects so we stopped and have been using diet, supplements and homeopathy. He went almost a year without a seizure, but they started up again last November. He has tonic/clonic seizures about once a month. It's been really frustrating for us these past months. He's graduating this month and now the future seems really scary because we thought the seizures were behind us. I guess I'm here to see if there is anything else we can try and to get some support. By the way, Troy is a very talented guitar and tennis player. If there are any other teens that could give him some support, I may be able to get him to join too.

Brandy,
Welcome to CWE! Have you made an appointment with a neurologist to see what other alternatives are out there? Are you considering trying a different medication since he is having breakthrough seizures with the diet/supplement/homeopathy route? Out of curiosity, what diet, supplements and homeopathics are you using? My daughter (age 15) has epilepsy. She takes lamictal and we are still working on gaining full control. Paige has made an account on CWE but has not yet looked around. I wish she would!
Welcome to CWE. I am sure you will find it to be a great place!

Hi Troys Mom, welcome!

Congrats on finding a non-medication approach that worked for your son. Did anything change last fall that could have acted as a trigger for your son? Any particular stresses, illnesses, or metabolic/lifestyle changes?. If there's no obvious answer, and your prior treatment plan no longer works, you might want to look into neurofeedback. More info here: http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f22/eeg-neurofeedback-501/

I understand that meds are not for everyone, but it's also important to prevent seizures from becoming commonplace. If your son's seizures are escalating in frequency or kind, then you might want to give medication another try. There are other meds out there besides Lamictal that might be a better match.

Best,
Nakamova
