I am new.
My son has been having seizures almost daily for about a month. He is 10 years old . He is on Keppra 1000mg 2 x a day and Clonazepam .75mg at night and .5 in the morning. This is aweful! He has barely been to school. Is tired and scared and angry, watches tv all day. It still isn;t under control and the dr. wants to up the Keppra again. I want to believe there is another way out of all of this. They said his magnesium level is fine. Do you think giving him epsom salts could help even though they are fine? I am hesitant just giving him anything.

Other Threads

There are some other threads on here that talk about magnesium. Since joining & reading this site I have started taking magnesium supplements. I do believe they help. I don't know if you can take epsom salts orally. You said his mag level was fine, but some people here take more than the RDA. I would recommend the magnesium & also B6 helps temper the Keppra anger. I take Keppra (same dose as your son) also. You might want to check out the "Nursery" also for other Mother's & Father's advice.

Hi Jeannie,

I glad you found CWE. I have learned more at this forum in the 1 1/2 year since I joined.

I sorry to hear what you and your son are going through.

Has his Dr. tried any other meds. There a so many out there.

I am on Dilantin and Clonazepam 0.5mg 1/2 tablet every four hours except at bedtime I take1 whole tablet.

I don.t if I should tell you this, I so don't want to upset you anymore than what you are, but I want you to know that Clonazepam is habit forming
I didn't't know this when I was given this med.
HAVING said that, my seizures are under control more now than in my 60 years.

One of the side effects with Keppra is anger. This might be causing some of the problems that he's having. Maybe talk to the dr about putting him on a different medicine. It took me a good while of switching meds and doses to get my seizures from daily to about 5 a month.

I was on one med that all I did was sleep, I'm sorry but I don't remember which one it was. I didn't want to get out of bed unless I absolutly had to. I wouldn't eat unless my mom brought the food into the bedroom for me. I just stayed in bed and slept. We told the neuro about this and he took me off of that med and I was doing ok after that.

Have you talked to the dr about what's going on with him? If the side effects are too much then his meds need to be changed. Like I said with me, the first meds that I was put on aren't the same ones that I'm taking now. It's a little bit of a trial and error thing sometimes.

It's a good idea to always talk to the dr before giving him something, even if it's something that another dr has pescribed. Meds that I have gotten off the shelf at a store and meds that drs have pescribed for me have both caused seizures before.

Has he ever had a seizure at school? He could be scared when the other kids see him have one that he doesn't know what they are going to do. Or if he has had one at school it might be possible that the kids have made fun of him or are scared of him. That's some of the things that kids that young do.
