Hello everyone,

I started having episodes that appear to be seizures several months ago. I am also having other neurological problems even when I am not having seizures. I have never experienced anything like this and still have yet to see a neurologist. My questions is about what to expect with the medication. I have been given dilantin. The seizures are now under control, however I still have a lot of neurological problems that have not gone away. Things like feeling drunk for no reason at all, or getting dizzy when I ride in a vehicle, or forgetting common words when I am speaking, or really slow thinking when someone is speaking to me. Is this the way it usually is with epilepsy. I know some people that take medication and have no symptoms if they are not having seizures. What is your experience. I do not know if this is part of the seizure disorder or if I have something else also going on. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sally,I have taken tegretol, keppra and now topamax and have had those side effects with all three.Unfortunately I think they are pretty common for a lot of people with a lot of anti epileptic drugs.Sometimes the side effects go away or become less severe but they haven't for me-I can't even look in the sky anymore because I will fall over,I am constantly dizzy.Yep epilepsy sucks!!!!!

Hi Sally, and Welcome!!
I have also had those same issues, although I have never taken that specific medication. I can't look up either. Isn't that weird?? I guess that is why we are "special" :)

Hi Sally, welcome to CWE!

It's possible that the Dilantin is causing at least some of the problems you describe. I was put on Dilantin when I first had seizures, on what was later determined to be way-too-high a dose. I felt drunk and uncoordinated. I staggered when I walked and felt drugged in general. My eyes would move rapidly from side to side. When my dose was reduced, those particular side effects went away. You might want to discuss with your neurologist the possibility that your dosage is too high, or look at other meds to try if the Dilantin is causing your problems.

Best,
Nakamova
