Hello everyone,

Last week if you were to tell me i would be spending most of my week looking up all the information i could find on seizures in children and Epilepsy, I would not have believed you!!! But here i am and am starting to process everything and leaning on my faith and heavenly father to get our family through this.

My son was at church with my husband ( me and my other kids were not with them as i was sick) on Sunday and since we all where not with him and his Aunt ( husbands aunt) had nursery, he left him go back with her. Long story short, out of the blue he threw his head back and his eyes rolled back and he started to go into a seizure. The seizure lasted no more than 10 to 12 seconds then he passed out and was unconscious for almost 15 minutes. 911 was called, I was called and off to the hospital I went. His blood work came back fine as did the cat-scan that they did. We now have an appointment with an neurologist that will be doing an MRI and an EEG on him.

Not sure what to expect and i feel like I'm watching him 24/7 just to make sure if it happens again I'm there. Anything i need to know before seeing the neurologist? Any questions that i need to make sure and ask? Thanks for all the help and look forward to reading and getting more information, also making new friends.

Welcome to CWE Emom! You will find lots of information and make some great friends here.

I am in exactly your place. Our daughter who is 15 had her first seizure two weeks ago tomorrow. She sees a neurologist on the 22nd..seems like such a long wait. And like you, I am constantly checking on her and watching her. Some days I think it drives her nuts but other days I think she is glad. Every little noise she makes, I go running. I keep telling myself that things will get back to 'normal' we just have to find a 'new' normal.

Just know that you are not alone, at least not here at CWE. *hugs*

I have no advice to offer, but I will most surely pray for your son. I ask that God touch him and restore him and that, that be the only seizure he ever experiences. God is with you! HUGS!!! : )

Hi Emom5, welcome to CWE!

It's definitely a possibility that your son's seizure was a one-off, and something that we will all hope for.

The neuro will probably want to wait for the results of the tests before discussing what comes next. Keep in mind that the MRI and EEG may be helpful for ruling a diagnosis IN, but they are also limited and don't always rule things OUT.

The neuro may ask if there's any family history of epilepsy, so do some digging if you need to. In addition, if you can think of any unusual symptoms or episodes your son might have had in the past -- anything at all -- it's worth making a note of. Some seizures can be triggered secondarily by a variety of stressors, so try and remember if there's anything that stands out in the days/hours leading up to your son's seizure. Triggers can be things like fatigue/illness/infection, reactions to particular foods or additives, flashing lights, etc.

And keep asking questions -- write things to down to ask the neuro, write down his answers, and make sure you find out how to contact him if you have more questions or if something isn't clear. If you aren't happy with the neurologist, don't hesitate to get a second opinion.

Best,
Nakamova

Thank you all so much for the info and prayers and sweet words. My son does already have BHS (breath holding syndrome). Its due to anytime he has pain he holder his breath and then passes out. However he has never (to our knowledge) seized before, and this time he had no pain or anything associated with it. He was coloring at a table and just went into the seizure, then passed out. When he usually passes out its pain induced and then he just passes out and wakes up within seconds and is back to his normal self within minutes. The fact that he seized and then was unconscious for almost 15 minutes showed us that this is completely different from anything else but in some way could be related. I will be calling my mom and asking all about our family history. Like katiebugsmom said, its the waiting part that is the hardest right now, walking into the unknown. Thanks again for all the advise and I'm so happy to have found a place that others know what I'm going through and have been there. :) God bless!

We have our neurologist appointment tomorrow, will know a little bit more about whats going on. Prayers would be appreciated. Thanks so much!
