Hello all,

Im a 41 y.o female who had my first seizure on Black friday of '10 in the middle of Best Buy. At the time the only thing i noticed was my eyes were flipping then next thing i woke up in the ambulance with the emt telling my husband that my blood sugar was only 58. I finally saw a neurologist in December and he says that 58 isnt low enough to cause a seizure, therefore all the tests began, Mri and Mra and 2 eeg's. The Mri and Mra came out fine, but the second EEG showed seizure confirmation. So i started Lamotrigine and was told not to drive, i started out with .50 mg a day to 100 mg a day and im now at 200 mg a day, 300 gave me real bad headaches.
My big concern is that these headaches may not go away and then i have to change meds and no driving again!! And my question for anyone out there is can Lamotrigine cause low blood sugar??

Thank you
<3 Bensgurl728

Welcome bensgurl728

I rarely have convulsive seizures but the most embarrassing one I had was in the middle of a Safeway. I was really shy next time I did my shopping there.

There are a lot of people on this site taking Lamotrigine. I would suggest you use the search option at the top of the page to see what everyone else has said about it.

Hi bensgurl728,

I'm on Lamictal, and it while it has had plenty of side effects for me, low blood sugar hasn't been one of them (perhaps because I seem to crave salty foods all the time and have gained weight on it.). But if you suspect low blood sugar ask your doc about doing a glucose test. And in the meantime make sure you are eating balanced meals throughout the day (particularly eating breakfast), and staying hydrated.

I did have headaches when I first went on Lamictal, but they went away after a few months. Like you, I backed off my dose (from 250mg to 175m)and that seemed to help.

The target blood sugar range is 70 to 120, so yours was on the low side when you had your initial seizure. It may not have been the sole cause, but it could definitely have been a contributing factor. BTW, many people seem to have seizures in the Big Box stores because of the fluorescent lighting -- don't know if this is one of your triggers, but it's something to consider.

I hope the headaches do go away and I'm sure someone on this forum will most probably know something about the meds you're on.. :)

Thank you all for responding to my post. The flourecent lighting issue is very interesting to me, because my husband who suffers from migraines as well as my daughter also have a reaction to "the big box stores." All this information has helped me alot with my understanding of the medication and triggers thank you again!

I get headaches from fluorescent lights, so I wear polarized sunglasses to cut out the flickering of the fluorescence. I get plenty of odd looks, but it's worth it. :)
