Hi I am Ham and I was so happy to learn about this group while browsing through the internet.

I have had seizures since I was young, but my mom insist it's just me being too sensitive about things. She would comment after a seizure that I was just tired, or didn't get to eat breakfast, scared of blood, too much pain, too scared.. you name it she used it.

She was forced to bring me to the doctor when I was a 6 grader because I was fainting at least once a week and sometimes twice in one day. She was told I had epilepsy but until this day, she is convince that I am just doing it to get attention.

I've tried many medicines from tregretol to the newest one Keppra but I am still having seizures.

I found this forum because I was told by my teacher that adult epilepsy doesn't exist and that if I was just having the usual 4-6 seizures a year then it is not possible to experience my latest bout with epilepsy which is back to seizures once a week. I just wanted to find people out there who understand what I am going through.

Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time :( Adult epilepsy definitely does exist, and it is certainly possible to have seizures once a week (or even more frequently than that). I can't believe anyone would say something so ignorant (well actually i can believe it but it annoys me!! ) I'm sure some others will be able to chime in as well soon! Welcome to CWE! You will definitely find people that understand here.

Hi icelrhys,
Welcome to CWE.
I'm sorry that your mum isn't so understanding in regards to your epilepsy.
As chmmr said adult epilepsy definitely does exist, there are quite a lot of members on here who have epilepsy as an adult or weren't diagnosed with epilepsy until they were older.

Hi and welcome Ham,

Sorry to hear about your seizures and your mom. Plus this teacher who is being such an fool about epilepsy. My seizures started when I was 22 years old, out of the blue. They first were SP, then slowly increased to CP and then went on to TC's. I had my first TC and was in a bad accident and was severely burned, so it really irritates me when I hear of idiots like this teacher of yours making such irrational statements! After that accident and being in the hospital for 2 months, the seizures were under control for a couple of years, then they came back as CP. I got to where I was having 4-5 of those a day. Went thru brain surgery and was seizure free for one year. Tried many more drugs. Tegretol was one of them and now I am on Keppra.
So I do understand what you are going thru.

Welcome to CWE ham,

Im really sorry to hear what a difficult time you have experienced. Many people don't understand epilepsy or more often than not, they don't want to understand. But i can guarantee you certainly won't find that on this web site.Everybody is great and if you have questions or problems somebody will help you. There are many people on here going through or have gone through everything you could imagine when it comes to epilepsy, also they are all willing to help in any way possible.

You have made a good decision coming on here, and will hear from a lot off great people. All the best and once again, welcome to CWE.

I didn't have my first seizure until 10 years ago when I was 26. It came on out of the blue and they don't know what caused it. I was diagnosed with epilepsy about a week later.

There are many people on here that have had seizures when they were children. They might go years without having any seizures then start having them again when they are in their 20s or 30s.

I have also taken a ton of different meds. Some work/help and others did nothing. I've been on some that caused me to have more seizures. Sometimes it takes awhile to figure out what's right for you.

People can be so stupid about things!!!! If it's not something that they are dealing with themselves then they don't know what it's like and think that it's something other than what it actually is.

You will find a lot of help on here and people that understand exactly what you are going through.
