Hello, I found your site by searching for "Weaning off of Keppra". I have been on Keppra 500mg twice a day since Nov 5th and still not feeling well. The first couple of weeks, I was very dizzy (actually bounced off a wall or two); that has subsided and has been replaced by terrible headaches, slight vision changes, difficulty in concentration, fine motor skills and today, word finding. I recently had a 2nd opinion and waiting for word as to any changes or tests but very frustrated and depressed. I'll be reading posts and hopefully will find some support and even some guidance in this journey.

Hi and Welcome.

This is a great forum, it's nice to have people WHO DO understand what your going through.

I'm in Dilantin and Clonazepam. I have been put on ever meds. even Keppra and I couldn't handle the side effects. There are many people in this forum who have luck with meds.

Look in all the forums and always feel free to ask any question you have.

Hope to talk to you again.

Hi Lynne,

I do hope you have a neurologist you trust that is helping you with the side effects you're experiencing? If not, please find one who will.

Not everyone has bad side affects so please listen to your own body and find a neurologist who specializes in Epilepsy - assuming that's what you have - and work closely with them when it comes to managing your meds.

Best wishes to you!

Welcome and glad to have you on cwe. you came to the right place. CWE is a valuable source of information and most importantly friendly people who can really help with the struggles of the journey to feel better.

I started Keppra on the same dose you had, and I didn't feel amazing at first but the side affects went away. The seizures did decrease. Though the drugs can be trial and error. You might end up finding a better drug or Keppra might be the right one. Best of luck and you aren't alone.

First Id like to wish you a warm welcome to Coping With Epilepsy! :)

There are alot of great people here, who have been very helpful to us all!

As for my experience with keppra, Ive been on it since the age of 17, and now being 31, Im still on it, and it works well for seizure control. I do recall having to get use to it at first, But as time went on, and as I increased my dose to the full 3000mgs a day which is what i take, I got use to the medication and now Im doing great!

let us know how your second opinion turns out! I will be praying you get the answers you need! :)

Welcome Lynne

I am the parent of a 16 year old who has had six seizures since May and is unhappy with Keppra.

Please know that you have found a haven with many knowledgeable and compassionate members. You are among friends. Don't hesitate to ask questions. Someone here has probably been there.

Good luck as you continue on this journey.

Tom

My two cents on Keppra. It didn't do much for seizure control for my daughter and made her a crabby, irritable child. We just weaned off last week, she is on Trileptal now. That being said, I do know of several people that do well on it, and the side effects get better in time.

Hi :) I am suffering from these exact side effects luckily my neurologist was happy for me to change meds, I am coming off of keppra and changing to tegretol retard hopefully within a few weeks my side effects will go away , speak to your neurologist and tell them you can't deal with it anymore :)

I haven't been so lucky in finding a decent neurologist. I called the clinic on Friday and the dictation from my consultation dated 12/14 hadn't even been done!! I am in the process of looking elsewhere for my care. On a positive note, reducing my dosage to 750mg/day has been effective at relieving my headaches. Weird. Thanks for your kind words and best of luck in the change of meds for you! Lynne

Meds work so different on everyone. I took Keppra 3000mg per day I had more seizures on that than I did with no meds....
