Hi everyone!

My two yr old daughter started having seizures on December 8th. After the second seizure, we weren't able to wake her up so we called 911 and she was transported to Children's Hospital. At the hospital, she was diagnosed with an ear infection and Febrile seizures and sent home. Within an hour of being home, she had another seizure. That weekend, she started having myoclonic jerks and then shortly after that, she started having seizures that I only know to be called "drop attacks" where she falls to the ground but gets right back up.

We saw a neurologist who did an EEG and MRI and it was confirmed that she does have Epilepsy. She started on Keppra which seemed to work for a short time but then she started having numerous drops everyday. Three weeks after the first seizure, she had another one at my mom's house. Previously she would go into a deep sleep after her seizures but this time she screamed for 30 minutes. Another trip to urgent care to rule out an ear infection. No ear infection, so the next day they started her on Depakote and Keppra. She did ok again for a few days and then starting having drops again. After another trip to the neurologist, we added Zarontin. So, she is currently on Zarontin, Depakote and Keppra (which was being weaned). Last Wednesday, she had another clonic tonic seizure so we are keeping her on the dose of Keppra she was on at that time.

I am hoping to get some insight from other parents. I would love to have my daughter stop falling on the floor but so far that hasn't happened. Is there more that could be done?

Hi Phiasmom, welcome to CWE!

My heart goes out to you and your daughter. I know from my own experience that the medication merry-go-round is tough, and it can't be easy for a two-year old and her parents. The med combo that's considered the "treatment of choice" for drop seizures is Depakote plus Lamictal, so you might want to ask your neurologist about that possibility. Has her neurologist considered the ketogenic diet, or done a nutritional work-up? In some cases making dietary changes can also help with seizure control.

You're doing the right thing by being proactive and looking for answers. You might want to check out "The Nursery" forum where other parents have posted.

Best,
Nakamova
